On this site Rinnai’s Hybrid water heating H2 array of Low-GWP 50kW heat pump plus bespoke thermal water stores, with optimised coil transfer to maximize heat pump performance, have been combined with ten cascaded Hydrogen blends ready (I2HY20 certified) continuous flow water heaters. The systems were delivered in one complete consignment, ready for installation at a new multi-million-pound development in the Farringdon district near the City of London. The expansive complex will comprise of a new luxury hotel, prestigious & contemporary office space plus affordable housing units.

The multi-purpose use of the site meant that only a fit-for-purpose design would satisfy the practicalities and nuances of space, demand, and energy usage in ensuring hot water requirements are met and exceeded 24/7.

The site was originally a Victorian-era schoolhouse for poor children. It was a ‘Ragged School’ – the term ‘ragged school’ was used by the London City Mission as early as 1840 to describe the establishment of schools, ‘formed exclusively for children raggedly clothed’. From around 1845 until 1881, the London ‘Ragged’ schools gave rudimentary education to about 300,000 children who were the poorest of the poor – orphans, waifs, and strays.

The expansive retrofit site will pay respect to this heritage with many of the original features retained in the 150+ bedroom luxury hotel, almost 20,000 sq ft of opulent capital city office space and nine new-build affordable residential units. The hotel group already has one other unit in London with two others planned.

’The site is very complex and still has many original features from the Victorian era – meaning that a full and comprehensive site survey with capital expenditure, operational expenditure and carbon modelling was conducted. We paid special attention to the practical requirements of the site which included 150 luxury bedrooms that needed constant hot water on demand, but we also needed to meet the site’s decarbonisation credentials. The overall system design meant that a truly hybrid system employing a heat pump, plate heat exchangers, bespoke thermal stores plus Hydrogen-ready hot water heating units was supplied in one complete consignment.

Once we had the data for capital expenditure, operational expenditure, and carbon modelling we were able to demonstrate to the clients a value proposition of a delivered-to-site-in-one-package. Rinnai’s Chris Goggin looks at what the new Government will face in establishing and re-organizing a coherent set of policies to enable the realistic achievement of NetZero in a pragmatic, economic and technically feasible manner. He will look at the current policy for off-grid properties as an example. And explore the alternative fuels coming onstream such as BioLPG and rDME.

 

The new Labour government should be legislating for UK customers to have flexible energy options that reflect the practical, economic, and technical reasoning needed to design and install decarbonising technology for all residential and commercial carbon reduction. Previously, despite electioneering statements by the then Govt, UK policy struggled to address the practical, economic, and technical feasibility nuances of the UK building stock and instead touted a heat pump only approach.

Now that a new government is in place an adapted national policy that affects both off and on-grid customers should focus on supplying UK customers with practical, technical, and economic solutions to every individual site.

Additionally, a new Labour government must provide a policy framework that supports a range of cost-effective low carbon fuels capable of efficient performance and carbon reduction. The government must also focus on an open and transparent collaborative approach with all facets of the power and energy industry so that all nuanced building envelopes can transition towards a low carbon future.

One way in which a new Labour government will be measured in terms of performance and commitment within UK energy is the direction of off-grid fuels and appliances.

There are approximately 1.65 million non-domestic buildings in England and Wales according to the last official report a few years ago.  Non-domestic buildings are defined as buildings which are not used as homes. Therefore, these buildings are diverse in size and structure and include commercial and public premises. Half (48%) of the NDCs surveyed used a form of electric heating on their premises whilst 30% had an oil boiler and 12% had an LPG boiler.

Of these approximately 280,000 are in areas not connected to the gas grid, and many of these use either oil, liquified petroleum gas (LPG), or coal powered heating systems to heat their buildings. The phasing out of fossil fuel installations in non-domestic buildings will therefore require a significant increase in the deployment of low carbon heating solutions, such as hybrid heating & hot water systems.

On the residential part of this sector there are an estimated 4.4 million households across the UK not connected to the gas grid in 2021, accounting for 15.1% of domestic properties, a sizable proportion of UK housing stock. Heat pumps are a viable carbon reducing technology capable of covering a sizable percentage of UK decarbonisation targets but are unlikely to satisfy rural customers due to a lack of insulation and other technical issues in older off-grid properties.

Rather than replacing a boiler or commercial water heating system and purchasing a heat pump, there are alternative ways to provide heat and hot water to off-grid properties. Drop in solutions such as BioLPG and future fuels such as r-DME mean that boilers and water heaters do not have to be replaced. Gaseous systems that accept fossil fuels are also capable of receiving biofuels as legitimate energies.

Future capacity of r-DME and other alternative biofuels are set to rise sharply in an approaching period further increasing the likelihood of this fuel being introduced nationally at some stage soon.

Off-grid UK residents are in an identical position to all other owners of residential and commercial properties in a requirement to decarbonise. As with all other domiciles and business premises that are off grid the UK government needs to implement a nationwide plan that is designed to ensure the quickest and cleanest route towards carbon reduction.

Current proposals insist all fossil fuel and LPG domestic boilers and commercial water heaters that provide heat and hot water to off-grid domiciles and commercial properties will be banned from 2035. In replacement of traditional boilers, the new UK government, instead, suggests that a heat pump is the preferred method of clean energy off-grid heating and hot water. This policy approach unfortunately does little to address those hard to abate properties that are seemingly left with no technical, practical or economically feasible solution. There have been huge investments, on a global scale, of billions of dollars and euros in synthetic and alternative fuels for off-grid.

For example, Dimeta – a collaborative effort by two of the world’s leading LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) distributors, SHV Energy and UGI International – is constructing a £150 million renewable & recycled carbon DME production plant in Teesside, northeast UK. Once operational the plant will produce over 50,000 tonnes of DME from non-recyclable waste – the equivalent of 25% of LPG domestic heating in the UK.

In addition to the first plant in the UK, subsequent plants are in development in Europe and the United States, as part of Dimeta’s goal to achieve 300,000 tonnes of DME production capacity by 2027.

American gas and electric company UGI and Dutch global LGP and LNG distributor SHV Energy said last year that they plan to construct up to six plants over the next five years with a total production capacity of 300,000 t of r-DME. Total investment could reach $1 billion if r-DME production facilities are constructed across Europe and America.

Rinnai and Dimeta are working together to design and produce off-grid energy and hot water supplies to properties not connected to the UK national grid. Rinnai is sensitive to both national and global shifts in customer and energy market requirements.

Rinnai and Dimeta have also signed a MOU (Memorandum of Understanding). Both companies will work together to explore blending DME with LPG and used in existing appliances. Dimeta and Rinnai will also aim to develop 100% DME dedicated appliances, including hot water production systems, boilers and dryers.

Rinnai aims to supply all UK customers with updated information pertaining to all energy matters that may affect future domestic and commercial decarbonising options.

Hamworthy Heating, technical experts of commercial heating and hot water products have launched the Tyneham 290HT commercial heat pump range with natural refrigerant, designed to achieve high flow temperatures of up to 75°C whilst benefiting from a low GWP of three.

COLLABORATION & ACTIVE CO-OPERATION IS KEY TO LIQUID RENEWABLE FUELS FUTURE IN COMMERCIAL & DOMESTIC HEATING HOT WATER MARKET – RINNAI

 

Close collaboration and co-operation on all aspects of the off-grid renewable fuels market is helping both the appliance manufacturers and the liquid fuels industry make significant inroads into achieving lower carbon footprints for all in the supply chain, all the way to the end-user.

Rinnai’s operations director Chris Goggin addressed the recent Liquid Gas UK Conference held in Liverpool. Liquid Gas UK is the trade association for the renewable liquid gas industry across the UK. Members of this trade association represent every position in the UK energy industry from BIOLPG and LPG suppliers, specifiers, heating engineers and installers.

Chris Goggin’s presentation also announced Rinnai’s professional relationship with Dimeta that seeks to encourage clean domestic alternative fuel usage in the UK. Both Rinnai and Dimeta aim to advance the national deployment of DME and r-DME that will assist in UK decarbonisation plans.

A MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) has been agreed upon by both Rinnai and Dimeta through ongoing collaboration. This partnership will work on the following critical areas: appliances, appliance iteration requirements for 100% DME and appliance materials compatibility. The MOU will explore the development and ultimate deployment of DME fuel and appliances.

Chris Goggin looks at the expansion of the global heat pump market as they will play a pivotal part in UK, European and international decarbonisation plans. Rinnai observes the market conditions that will likely see heat pump technology become standard household appliances on an international scale.

 

 

Heat pumps will make a significant contribution towards global decarbonisation aims, of that there appears to be little doubt. The international heat pump market is projected to substantially expand as fossil fuels are phased out in favour of clean carbon neutral energies. Heat pumps are becoming seen internationally as trusted tools of decarbonisation with major economies across the globe adopting them as a preferred method of heating and hot water delivery to domestic and commercial sites.

Heat pumps will certainly be a major contributor towards the introduction of clean renewable energy across EU member states. The EU aims to increase the number of heat pumps installed in member countries with its REPowerEU plan. The plan covers diversifying energy supplies, producing clean energy and reducing overall energy consumption.

Current estimations on heat pumps that have been installed across Europe are around 20 million. 3 million of these heat pumps were purchased during 2022. European heat pump sales throughout 2022 resulted in a 39% increase, up 5% when compared to 2021.

France bought and installed more heat pumps than any other EU nation in 2022 when compared to 21 other European heat pump markets. 621,776 individual heat pump units were sold and installed in France throughout 2022. UK statistics show that the UK had sales of 55,168.

Scandinavian and Baltic EU states maintain the highest levels of domestic heat pump adoption – Norway has 60%, Sweden 43%, Finland 41%, and Estonia 34%. Norway has 1.4 million actively operational heat pumps that provide essential heat and hot water to domestic properties.

Heat pumps provide heating and hot water towards 16% of all domestic and commercial properties across Europe and there are further plans to install an added 60 million more by 2030. Heat pump technology is a certified method of clean energy dispersal and international market projections expect further expansions in size and scope. The current European heat pump market is healthy whilst the future heat pump market will continue to grow.

America is another area of importance regarding domestic and commercial property heat pump adoption. More heat pumps were sold and installed than gas furnaces during 2022. Heat pump sales amounted to 4.3 million whilst sales of gas fuelled heating and hot water systems were 3.9 million.

The residential heat pump market in the US was valued at $13 billion in 2020 and is expected to grow at a CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate) of 5% between 2021 – 2030.

American heat pump adoption has resulted in an 11% increase in sales of air sourced heat pumps during 2022. Heat pump sales throughout US territory have steadily increased for 20 years. In 2001, 1.44 million air source heat pumps were sold. In 2021, customers purchased 3.92 million air source heat pumps.

As in Europe, the American heat pump market performs strongly and is expected to grow over the coming years. In 2022 the US was the most dynamic heat pump market in the world – with a 15% increase in recorded sales.

Another significant player in the international heat pump market is China, which manufactures 40% of the world’s heat pumps. China is the globes largest producer of heat pumps with many of the finished units being exported to Europe.

Heat pumps are a recognised technology throughout all Chinese regions and play a key part in heating and hot water delivery as well as air conditioning. 58.4 million heat pumps have been installed in China as of 2020 – 33% of the world’s installed heat pumps. China is the biggest market for air source heat pumps with sales increasing by 7% in 2021 and 12.5 million units in operation.

In 2022 China recorded a 20% increase in air to water heat pumps compared to sales statistics in 2021. Over 1 million air source heat pumps were sold in China in 2022. China is currently the third most dynamic international heat pump market with a recorded annual 13% increase in national sales.

According to the website Global Heat Pump Statistics (April 2023) “Leading manufacturers are seeing promising signs that today’s momentum and policy support could put the industry on a trajectory that triples sales by 2030 – and they have accordingly announced plans to invest more than $4 billion in expanding heat pump production and related efforts, mostly in Europe.”

Heat pump sales increased by more than 11% globally in 2022. Widespread UK heat pump adoption is yet to be fully announced through sales and industry growth statistics. However, it can be observed that the heat pump industry and market is expanding exponentially, with the UK expected to also increase the size and levels of activity within the domestic heat pump market. A JUST TRANSITION FOR OFF-GRID SITES

 

Rinnai has welcomed the UK Govt’s policy paper “Biomass Strategy 2023.” that outlines the growing importance of biomass fuels as well as a future expansion which will see production levels rise. Biomass energy is comprised of materials of biological origin such as plants, wood and waste (manure).

Professor Paul Monks, the Chief Scientific Advisor to the Department of Energy Security comments in the report,” The United Kingdom has set an ambitious target to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. Meeting this target will require a significant shift in our approach to energy and low carbon technologies. There has never been a more crucial time to take action.

“Biomass can play a significant role in decarbonising nearly all sectors of the economy. The UK is already a global leader in biomass policy and technologies, with biomass accounting for 8.6% of our energy supply in 2022.” Biomass materials are nationally sustainable with 66% of domestic biological ingredients deriving from the UK.

 

UK policy makers are keen on introducing alternative energies that prevent the release of emissions and provide clean power to commercial and domestic applications. Another form of alternative bioenergy is  DME. DME is renewable dimethyl ether and it is produced from renewable and recycled carbon feedstock. It is a clean-burning fuel which is chemically like propane and butane, so it behaves in the same way as LPG.

Just like LPG, DME is easily and safely transported as a liquid in pressurised cylinders and tanks. It is specifically important to off grid sites up and down the UK.

DME is a simple solution that allows commercial and residential users to further reduce their greenhouse gas emissions and transition to a more sustainable future.

DME maintains a low greenhouse gas footprint, reducing emissions by up to 85% compared to fossil fuels. Depending on the feedstock and production process used, DME can even have negative greenhouse gas emissions.

BOILER UPGRADE SCHEME INQUIRY SLAMMED

‘Immoral’ taxpayer-funded heat pump handout for the middle classes must be scrapped and reducing bills prioritised

 

In response to the House of Lords Boiler Upgrade Scheme Inquiry, an energy industry expert is emphasising the need to scrap the scheme and focus on measures to bring energy bills down.

 

Mike Foster, CEO of the not-for-profit trade association the Energy and Utilities Alliance (EUA), said:

 

“This report confirms just how far removed this committee is from the average member of the public. While we agree the Boiler Upgrade Scheme is failing, we want to see it scrapped, rather than see the recommendation of the committee to double-down on the flawed policy be supported.”

“Giving a £5,000 taxpayer handout to the well-off is immoral and simply cannot be justified when millions are living in fuel poverty and we all face a 20 per cent increase in our bills from April.”

“Exposing just how out of touch the committee are, they suggest removing government protections around insulation requirements as a way of increasing the take up of heat pumps, when this will only push up bills and create a backlash against this technology. Because the money is tied up in the scheme, it can’t be used to fund sensible measures like insulation that permanently reduce bills and carbon emissions. Insulation can also be targeted at the least well-off, making it a fairer policy too!”

“The committee is right to suggest there is a high level of misinformation around hydrogen – publishing highly misleading conclusions around hydrogen is a prime example of this. The Government’s plans for hydrogen-ready boilers are a no regrets option going forward, helping households decarbonise their homes with minimal disruption and crucially without the £13,000 upfront cost of a heat pump.”

“This sum may be pocket change to the committee members but to most British households, it is simply eye-watering; they can’t afford it with or without a £5,000 bung.”
