Rinnai, manufacturer of the energy efficient range of Infinity continuous flow water heaters, recently stepped in to ensure a recent BBC Countryfile event in the grounds of historic Blenheim Palace had a plentiful supply of hot water for its catering outlets.

Managing director for Prestek Services in Derbyshire, John Webster, no stranger to providing water for Blenheim Palace outdoor events, was called in to supply the means to provide hot water to the various catering operations dotted around the grounds.

Originally a kitchen and bathroom fitter, John has built a business providing water for events since first supplying a festival in 2001 and feels he has found his niche. “By its nature the events market is a small community so most of my work comes though word of mouth from relationships that have sometimes been 20 years building.” He believes the backbone to that trust is in providing reliable systems that work.

“I have used Rinnai hot water heating units for some time,” he says, “and believe they are the only ones suitable for this kind of work. They are a tried and tested solution. I first came across Rinnai units at an equestrian event around 10 years ago where they were being used for the mobile shower units. The customers loved them. Having seen the units in action I decided to purchase Rinnai for my own business.”

He explains that he has a fleet of hot water units that he can roll out whenever needed. “I have six Rinnai units running on LPG gas which are configured on to a T-stand, linked to the cold water supply and then linked to a sink in the wash-up area. It is an ideal arrangement for a temporary potwash area.”

At Blenheim Palace he was able to site individual wash up areas around the show area by linking them to a temporary system of pipework several kilometres long. “We simply had to build the network, link pipework and gas cylinders to the boilers, add a sink, and the caterers all had instant hot water.”

“All went well with no complaints from the caterers who had as much hot water as they desired. Which, let’s face it, is exactly what was required.”

The Rinnai units will never run out of temperature safe hot water all the time they are connected to a water supply. The burner lights automatically when the hot water tap is opened, and extinguishes when the tap is closed. Ignition is electronic so there is no pilot light. When the hot water tap is off, no gas is used.

As far as John is concerned for his kind of work he needs a product that is reliable, quick to set up and gets going with no worries. “Which is why we use Rinnai. You could say, they do what it says on the tin.”

Staff from CMS Window Systems joined an army of volunteers, including former Prime Minister Gordon Brown and his wife Sarah, to help provide a much needed Christmas boost for hundreds of Fife families struggling to make ends meet.

More than 800 children benefited from the day organised by Fife charity ‘The Cottage Family Centre’, during which volunteers joined forces to prepare and distribute crates of food, bags of new toys and children’s clothes to more than 400 families in Kirkcaldy and the surrounding area in time for Christmas.

Joining volunteers from across the town including its former MP Gordon Brown and his wfe, a team from CMS gave up their day jobs to help. This included drivers and their vans to deliver the Christmas bundles, with the company also providing extensive warehousing which became the hub of the operation.

CMS has supported The Cottage Family Centre charity for many years in its work to aid families and individuals who are vulnerable to social exclusion as a result of factors such as poverty, low paid employment, poor housing, relationship breakdown, drug and alcohol problems and health related issues.

The Cottage Family Centre’s Service Manager, Pauline Buchan who organised the day said: “We are extremely grateful to have the ongoing support of CMS as it is critical to ensuring we can continue to provide vital assistance to the most disadvantaged in our communities. It is fantastic to know our most vulnerable children and families have been provided for over the Christmas period.”

Billy Semple, Director at CMS Window Systems added: “The Cottage Family Centre provides tremendous support to vulnerable families, so we’re only too pleased to assist in whatever way we can. We’ve got to know the communities of Fife very well over the years though our work with Fife Council, which primarily involves helping to improve the quality and comfort of buildings across the region by providing energy efficient windows, doors and curtain walling solutions. So we know only too well that we are in a privileged position to help, and that includes using our manpower, storage facilities and delivery vehicles for this charity day.”

Based at Castlecary near Glasgow with additional premises in Kirkcaldy, CMS Window Systems is one of the UK’s largest window, door and curtain walling designers, manufacturers and installers helping social landlords like Fife Council provide the most energy efficient and comfortable buildings and homes.

Smart-Space, one of the UK’s leading manufacturers and installers of temporary, semi-permanent and permanent buildings, has completed a four-court sports hall with equipment storage rooms and changing rooms for Coundon Court school, an all-inclusive Academy with around 1,650 students aged 11 to 18, based in Coventry.

The 25-metre by 35-metre facility is a fully insulated steel building, clad with composite and Dura Clad timber.

Up to 70 students at a time use the hall, playing a variety of sports including badminton, basketball, tennis, handball and cricket under the supervision of staff from the school’s ten-strong PE team.

“We had no adequate internal sports facility, but the cost of a brick-built hall was prohibitive,” says school principal Andrew Clay. “Fortunately we were aware of a previous Smart-Space build at another school and knew that a steel building was an efficient and quick way of providing what we needed at a reasonable cost. We also knew we could rely on Smart-Space to deliver the high levels of quality we required.”

The fifteen-week full design and build project included the demolition of two derelict properties, as well as ground works and the design and construction of the new building. Smart-Space was also responsible for the installation of air handling units, as well as the installation of radiators, toilets and LED lighting.

“Smart-Space undertook the project during term-time and went to great trouble to ensure there was minimal interference with the school routine. On one day, all work on the project stopped while 20 of our design technology students toured the site and learned a great deal from the Smart-Space team about the construction,” says Mr Clay. “The whole school was excited by the prospect of a sports hall, were intrigued by its construction and are fully appreciative of the resulting facility. We’re delighted with the hall and with the impact it has had on our students’ engagement with sport.”

Mechanical Electrical Fixings (MEF) has announced the opening of its 15,000sq ft. distribution centre in Santry, Dublin to meet increasing demand for Metsec products in Republic of Ireland.

Established thirty years ago, the Edinburgh-based wholesaler MEF has worked with Metsec for the past decade and is one of the largest stock-holders of Metsec cable management products in the UK.
Earlier this year, MEF acquired a Belfast base to serve the market in Northern Ireland, but with increasing demand for Metsec’s products, decided to open a further distribution centre in Eire.

Metsec

Richard Allen, general manager at Metsec, says: “We have been receiving enquiries from Ireland for quite some time and were struggling to meet demand. Shipping products over from mainland UK was proving time consuming and costly, so we weren’t as competitive as we could be.

“Thanks to MEF’s extensive distribution centre in Dublin, coupled with the existing Belfast site, we can now get our products to customers more quickly and it makes our products attractive to the Irish market.”

Mike Mearns, commercial director at MEF, says: “The Republic of Ireland is going through a boom time with the Irish government attracting major technology investment and we’ve seen a large number of big players in the data centre industry recently building or expanding facilities in Ireland.

“These data centres require a substantial amount of cable management products, including trunking, trays and both pre- and post-galvanised ladders. The new distribution centre means we can provide the Metsec products to these customers quickly and at a very competitive price.

“We at MEF are very excited about this new venture, stocking further Metsec cable management products in Ireland to meet the contractors’ requirements,” Mearns concluded.

With tens of thousands of public votes cast and 500 cafes entering, SIG Roofing’s hugely popular competition to find Britain’s Best Cafe is approaching its final stage with the announcement of its 14 regional winners.

The lucky proprietors and staff now head to London for a grand celebration lunch where the national winner will be announced, with the top prize of a fabulous 4-night trip to New York City and a visit to the famous Ellen’s Diner on Broadway.

The competition has been run to recognise the outstanding job local cafes do in the working lives of SIG Roofing customers and the local community and to underline the ‘local accent’ of the company’s services through its national network of 120 branches.

SIG Roofing’s Marketing Manager, Janine Brady, explains. “Roofing and building contractors are some of the most loyal and regular customers of Britain’s cafes. For many they are a daily place to meet, eat and enjoy both great food and service with a smile. Our branches offer a local service that’s very different in content – but with the same type of engagement and good humour. Running this competition to find Britain’s Best Cafe is our way of recognising and thanking the cafes for all that they do feeding their hungry customers and those in the local area!”

With the 14 regional winners announced, tension is now mounting as all the hopefuls head for the culmination of the competition in London this November. Voting, both online and in SIG Roofing branches, has outdone expectations and there has been hot competition for the top spot.

You can find out who the regional winner is in your area by visiting www.britainsbestcafe.co.uk.

Local cafes around the UK are vying for the title of Britain’s Best Cafe, in a national competition where everyone will get the chance to vote for their favourite.

With thousands of cafes in the UK helping the nation to get to work every morning courtesy of the famous morning cuppa, Bacon Buttie or the legendary British Breakfast every vote will count.

The national competition is being organised by SIG Roofing and its 120 local branches will be supporting the cafes in their bid to win the title. When votes are counted at the end of October this year, 14 regional winners will be announced and cafe owners and their guest will be on their way to a celebratory lunch in London’s famous Chiswell Street Brewery in November.

There, SIG Roofing Managing Director Andrew Wakelin will announce the national title holder of Britain’s Best Cafe and the winning cafe proprietor, together with their guest, will be heading for a four-day trip to New York City – including a taste of New York’s finest breakfast at Ellen’s Stardust Diner on Broadway and 51st Street, just off the legendary Times Square.

SIG Roofing supplies more than 40,000 products across pitched, flat roofing and industrial roofing and cladding and the competition is a sign of commitment to its customers, along with its determination to preserve the long-term relationship that the local SIG Roofing branches have built with them over the years.

Marketing Manager Janine Brady explains how their branches, their customers and the local cafes have important links – all playing a part in each other’s day to day lives, with valuable relationships built up over many years. Britain’s Best Cafe is SIG Roofing’s way of recognising and thanking the cafes for all that they do feeding their hungry customers and those in the local area!

“Our customers are at the centre of all that we do and we believe the roofers and contractors who make up our loyal customers are the best people to judge what makes a great British Breakfast – many of them have a regular cafe which not only provides a great British Breakfast but it’s also a place they can meet and relax before a hard day’s work. For SIG Roofing the competition is a thank you to our customers, a renewal of the relationship with the local branch, and a chance for the general public to join in the fun.”

As part of the competition, customers, contractors from all trades and the general public can visit their local SIG Roofing branch to cast their vote in-branch.

Thousands of cafes throughout the UK were invited to register for the competition, with many of them having signed up for their chance to win! To find out if your local cafe has registered just visit www.britainsbestcafe.co.uk. Registered cafes will also be displaying posters, voting forms and till ‘wobblers’ – all ready to encourage their customers to cast their vote too.

SIG Roofing will also be running a number of PR stunts from the start of voting on 5th September to the close on 28th October, together with local media involvement and a full range of social media support… so be sure to watch out for more coming soon and see how you can get involved.

Complete details can be found at www.britainsbestcafe.co.uk and anyone who wants to support their cafe in the bid for the title Britain’s Best Cafe can vote in any branch of SIG Roofing or online via the dedicated website.
