This summer, established aluminium fabricator Alumen Ltd is launching a new product that’s set to revolutionise the aluminium sliding door market. Partnering with Spanish aluminium giants Cortizo, Alumen is one of the first fabricators to launch the Cor-Vision Plus sliding door to the UK market.

Alan Robinson, Alumen’s MD elaborates “The new aluminium sliding door system has been designed to offer uninterrupted, expansive glass areas thanks to its incredibly slim sightlines. Its innovative inlaid frame design, coupled with ultra-slim sash profiles, means that the visible profile on an installed doorset is just 25mm.

“Cor-Vision Plus offers industry-leading credentials across the board. It’s available with maximum sash sizes up to four metres width and height, with two, three of four sash options. Sashes can be fixed or sliding, on twin or triple tracks. It can handle double or triple glazed IGUs up to 54mm thick, allowing U-values of down to 0.9 and acoustic insulation of up to 43 dBA.

“Homeowners want to connect their indoor and outdoor spaces and Cor-Vision Plus is a significant step towards that. While its ultra-slim design is the headline feature, everything about it has been put together with practicality in mind. When the doors are closed they’ll see just 25mm of profile, everything else is glass. But when the doors are open, its innovative inlaid pocket frame means that there’s zero threshold – nothing to interrupt the flow from inside to outside.

“The rollers are in the frame, while the sashes have stainless steel reinforced channels. This makes operation incredibly smooth and easy, and enables heavier sashes. As result, sashes up to 400kg can be manually operated, while any sash up to 700kg can be motorised.

“The result is a stunning – although almost invisible – architectural sliding door that can be used in apertures up to 16 metres wide by four metres high. But more importantly, it allows people to connect their indoor and outdoor spaces in a way that’s never been seen before.”

FIT Show moves to NEC with more than 200 exhibitors and dozens of aluminium exhibitors for the first time ever!

Taking place towards the end of May at the National Exhibition Centre, the Fabricator Installer Trade Show – or FIT for short – will have more than 200 exhibitors showing a huge range of the latest windows, doors and related products and equipment in a business-to-business event that has grown by more than 60% over last years event. But what makes this window and door exhibition the most exciting for at least 20 years is the sheer diversity of products.

Whilst ‘the FIT Show’ is now a household name amongst window and door manufacturers and installers especially in the home improvement sector, the ‘FIT’ acronym does not ring bells for everyone. And yet behind the brand lies the most powerful buying tool available in the UK for commercial buyers and specifiers of residential windows and doors.

With more than 200 exhibitors showing the vast majority of major and minor brands serving the UK market, the event provides a fertile buying ground for design and procurement professionals from all sectors. But what marks out this year’s event is the huge contingent of exhibitors showing aluminium window and door systems and finished products in addition to virtually every PVC-U systems supplier in the UK.

An estimated 30% of exhibitors are showing aluminium window and doors, more than at any other similar UK event for at least 20 years, providing a huge choice for visitors from all sectors. And emphasising the continued buoyancy in the market and the success of the FIT Show in satisfying the needs of buyers hungry for innovation and choice, for 2017 the event moves to the NEC for the first time, taking place from 23rd to 25th May in halls 6, 7 and 8.

A look at the current exhibitor list will more than justify the decision to attend, with more exhibitors signing for the last few available stands on a daily basis.

Reynaers has once again been recognised as leading the industry, after receiving two award nominations this month.

The aluminium systems company has been put forward for the prestigious G16 Awards and the Construction Marketing Awards (CMA), which recognise marketing excellence in the built environment.

Judges from the CMAs selected Reynaers as a contender for the ‘Best use of advertising’ award. Reynaers designs and supplies aluminium window, door and curtain wall systems to both the commercial and domestic construction markets and its use of testimonials in its advertising this year has made it stand out from competitors.

Meanwhile, Masterline – the latest window system addition to Reynaers’ portfolio – has been nominated for ‘New Product of the Year’ at the G16 Awards.

The Masterline window system is a completely new window suite that will be launched next year in the UK. It is destined to set a new benchmark in terms of thermal insulation, weather resistance, security, strength and durability, sustainability, design flexibility, aesthetics, production efficiency, and value for money.

Running for more than a decade, The G Awards celebrate and reward excellence in the UK Glass and Glazing industry.

Hugh Moss, Reynaers’ Head of Marketing, said: “We’re delighted to have been nominated for both of these awards and can’t wait for the results. It is fitting that in 2016, our 25th anniversary year here in the UK, we have been recognised as leading the industry with our products and our marketing.”

Most of the oldest buildings in the country, those that we have all admired and enjoyed – from castles and palaces, to places of learning, prayer, contemplation and recovery – have magnificent doors made from timber. Today these national treasures, protected and cosseted with the help of private trusts, public ownership and a stream of funding to support regular maintenance, look every bit as imposing as they did when they were crafted.

This cannot be said of the cheap imports, mainly from the Far East, that were much needed to support the explosion of property ownership in the 1960s through to recent times. For those who did, and can still, purchase their local authority house at a fine discount, ownership encouraged investment in new doors and windows. The market research carried out by the British woodworking industry in the late 1970s, when Taiwanese imports were at their highest level, identified that UK home owners typically paid an average of £50 for a new front door, a stark difference to their West German counterparts who would pay in the region of £3000.

“This prompted an industry-funded campaign aimed at the private home owner to invest in a new timber entrance door, made in the UK, named: What a Difference a Door Makes,” says Roy Wakeman, CEO, The Performance Timber Products Group. “The campaign was hugely successful and while it didn’t see off all the cheap imports the consumer became educated about the benefits of a home-produced timber door and willing to spend more. By the mid ‘80s the market peaked at 3m units and had a value of £400m.”

Inevitably the bubble burst, brought about by the plastic revolution and campaigns selling the virtues of double glazed fenestration with low pricing and so called ‘authentic, classic design’. By 2000 the timber market share was lost in windows alone, by some 80%, in favour of plastic. Timber doors however retained a higher share as the consumer was attracted to the greater security of timber and its performance.

More recently the industry has seen the rise of composite door constructions where modern materials have been used to make up the door core; this has then been covered with an external finish of thermal plastic; glass-reinforced plastic, GRP; and even wood fibre-based boards. These products have performed and today account for more than half of the UK market, now measured at £600m with growth of more than 5% per annum.

Security and robustness has been achieved by the strength of the door core together with good ironmongery. Today this will contain espagnolette systems that can lock all three leading edges using shoot bolts, or hooks, with a central controlling arm handle.

A national standard for security has existed, along with test methodology to BS7950, which values security, thermal performance and weather resistance to regional degrees of exposure. A police-recommended standard and marketing tool for the private housebuilding sector, Secured by Design, has prevailed for more than 30 years and is frequently a standard requested by designers, architects and developers responsible for new developments.

Only last year the new Approved Document Q Building Regulations was introduced for the new-build sector which demands even greater security standards for doors and windows. The security standard demanded by Building Regulations, to which products are tested, is known as PAS24 but prior to this all products must be tested and rated for weather and air tightness to meet BS6375 (Parts 1 & 2).

“While the requirement to meet Doc Q applies to new buildings only, existing home owners will want these security benefits applied to replacement products for the upkeep and maintenance of their properties as well as for major refurbishments and extensions,” says Roy Wakeman. “Current research suggests that the major driving force for home owners when purchasing new doors and windows is security and energy conservation.

“It comes as no surprise that the timber door, complete with all the appropriate ironmongery, factory assembled and finished, is now leading the way again to dominate the choice for new door designs and mechanics that more than satisfy today’s demanding standards.” Products manufactured by Mumford & Wood entirely in Great Britain all meet the very highest standards demanded today.

Timber is the most versatile of all materials and can be easily finished with modern water-based paints or stains, chosen from a huge range of colours and shades. These modern finishes now come with life time warranties for the complete door set, with maintenance cycles at a very minimum, and the paint itself is expected to last up to eight years before re-decoration is needed.

Composite door cores, using urea or phenolic forms, are not exactly the best products to satisfy today’s demanding consumer who knows all about active carcinogens and the toxicity of chemically-based products. For complete peace of mind it is far better to use a sustainable and naturally-replacing material, such as timber, to ensure that our children’s children grow up in a safe, sound and comfortable environment behind modern timber windows and doors.

Modern timber engineering techniques and water-based, friendly finishing treatments, do make timber the material with the very greenest credentials.

Months of rumours and speculation are now at an end as Profile 22 launches not one but two of the industry’s most eagerly awaited window and door systems. Hailed as the biggest new product introduction in the window industry for a decade, Profile 22 has unveiled Optima, developed to be the most advanced products of their type available in the UK today.

Developed specifically with commercial sectors in mind, and backed by the Profile 22 Approved Window Contractors scheme, Optima offers a compelling choice for the professional specifier. Behind this launch is a radical rethink of each of the key processes in the production of a window and door system for the 21st Century: extrusion processes that ensure superb quality and consistency whilst protecting the environment through reduced energy and ecological impact and products that easily satisfy current technical and aesthetic demands by anticipating those of many years ahead.

The two product streams are characterised by the Optima Chamfered System and the Optima Sculptured System, from which a large number of options are available including a brand new Flush Casement to compete in the burgeoning ‘heritage’ flush sash timber replacement sector.

In basis the systems offer a 6 chamber outer frame (up to 8 with RCM inserts) and a 5 chamber sash (6 with RCM), structures that provide optimal thermal performance and rigidity with the capability of U values as low as 0.8 W/m2K with appropriate Argon filled IGUs. Around these basic structures will be the widest range of ancillaries and add-ons of any system on the market to allow the production of windows in every style, for every property type. Important niche products such as a fully reversible window; a vertical sliding sash; flush tilt & turn; a flush casement; composite door; french door sets; and a patio door may be manufactured by combining existing profiles with the Optima suite. Performance is to A++ Window Energy Rating.

The Profile 22 system that Optima replaces enjoyed huge popularity for its aesthetics and Optima retains a close similarity, but with a larger rebate and stylish slim upstand. The distinctiveness enjoyed by Profile 22 over other systems will therefore continue.

The real difference however is in the details: the system is designed with a high performance centre seal option for improved weather and thermal performance, features that are unique to Optima amongst UK systems; deeper drainage channels further improve water egress and contribute towards weather performance.

Optima has been designed to offer the widest choice of glazing options on the market including 24 and 28mm double and 36, 40 and 44mm triple glazed units. Bead location has been fully researched with the result that glazing clips are unnecessary to pass security tests and are future-proof against proposed and anticipated enhancements to PAS24.

The systems have been awarded the British Standard Kitemark which includes testing to BS6375 parts 1, 2 & 3, Performance of windows and doors in addition to testing in relation to PAS24:2016 enhanced security performance requirements for doorsets and windows in the UK. Both standards are the latest to be published and allow specifiers to assess Optima against the most exacting UK standards currently available.

Products are also manufactured under Environmental and Health & Safety standards BS EN ISO 14001 and BS EN ISO 18001 respectively and BES6001 to ensure Responsible Sourcing of Construction Products. The Optima systems far surpass UK and EU Building Regulations and PAS24, and have the highly accredited Secured by Design approval. In short Optima is the most accredited window system available in the UK market today.

The increased demand in the window market for colour and woodgrain has been acknowledged with an increased stock and fast turnaround of special colour options. The Optima foil offer is superior to that of any other systems supplier boasting 28 colour options. The range of greys competes well with aluminium products.

Andrew Reid, Commercial Sales Director of Profile 22 says: “We wanted the new window systems to be the best in the market and represent innovative design and exceptional thermal performance. We designed the new products around the needs of the specifier for slim, modern and stylish aesthetics, whilst offering the most technologically advanced product features and performance capabilities to future-proof our product range in meeting future Building Regulations.

“To achieve this we have invested in the most advanced extrusion systems available today. This investment ensures consistently excellent window and door profile quality whilst also significantly reducing the environmental impact of the production process. This is a key element in the specification of modern window and door products,” added Andrew.

“Specifiers can include Optima knowing that they are choosing the most advanced window and door products available in the UK today with key benefits of exceptional thermal performance, reduced maintenance schedules and improved durability. Their clients will also enjoy the benefits of excellent design, greater comfort levels and security as well as reduced heating bills for tenants and homeowners alike.”

Those wanting to appreciate Optima are encouraged to visit the Profile 22 microsite www.profile22.co.uk/optima, the showroom in Telford or at the Building Centre, London.

It may be small but it packs a punch! The launch of GEZE’s new sliding door system is a real David and Goliath affair. The Levolan 120 belies its modest appearance – the slimline fitting can effortlessly move internal doors of up to 120kg with elegant ease.

It has twice the load-bearing capacity of its “little brother”, the Levolan 60 which won the Plus X Award and was named the Best Product of 2014, in its category.

The Levolan 120 shares its discreet aesthetic: with straight lines and modular composition, it’s a system which is highly adaptable. Its sleek track, which is only 50mm high, includes integrated derailing protection and can be conveniently installed from the front.

This means that large panelled sliding doors – made from glass, wood, metal or plastic – which have interior design impact and a real “wow factor” can be put in place in the knowledge that their practical application can be effectively managed.

Additional safety is provided by the Levolan 120 SoftStop draw-in damping device which can be incorporated into the track as an option. The sliding door leaves are gently guided into their end position with little possibility of anything hitting the frame or risk of fingers being trapped.

The system has specially designed roller carriers which ensure outstanding load distribution enabling the leaves to move easily and almost silently. Its derailing protection is triggered automatically when the height of the door leaf is adjusted, ensuring that the best possible level of opening and closing is provided.

The clamping roller carriage is designed for glass thickness of 10 – 12.76mm which allows the Levolan 120 to be installed with door leaves made of laminated safety glass.

Its compact dimensions make is extremely versatile meaning it can be installed on a wall, suspended from a ceiling or glass fanlight or invisibly mounted within a ceiling.

The Levolan Smart fix installation system makes fitting fast and straightforward – just one Allen key and one open-ended spanner are needed to set the height of the cam – and the leaf and roller carriage can be mounted on the track and calibrated from the front.

Due to its modular composition, the Levolan 120 can be provided as ready-made sets configured to the customer’s needs or as individual parts.

The modular construction of the Levolan system also means that the parts for the Levolan 120 and the Levolan 60 are interchangeable – reducing the number of parts required for installing sliding door leaves of different weights and sizes.

Andy Howland, sales director of GEZE UK said the Levolan 120 was a “tiny powerhouse” capable of moving large sliding doors “easily and effortlessly”

“This Levolan 120 is an evolution to our existing award-winning interior sliding door system, with a phenomenal load movement capacity, modest in size and near silent in operation. We are confident that this product will be the ideal solution to large door leaf requirements which are currently very popular within contemporary interior design schemes.”

By Dr Chris Iddon CEng MCIBSE – Natural Ventilation Design Manager with SE Controls

For centuries, windows have been the preferred and sometimes the only means of ventilating buildings to ensure that carbon dioxide, temperatures and pollutants can be vented and replenished by fresh air.

They remain an important part of the ventilation solution as windows can provide greater air flow rates and the capacity for purge ventilation required by Building Regulations ADF (for example to vent odours caused by spillages) and also the greater flow rates required for cooling during the warmer summer months, both during the day and as part of a night purge strategy.

Ensuring openable windows comply with Building regulations

Nevertheless, designers should be aware that any window upgrade undertaken as part of a building refurbishment or repurposing project that incorporates the replacement of high-level openable windows, must comply with Building Regulations Part K (Part N in Wales). They stipulate that window opening controls must be accessible and located no more than 1900mm above floor level (AFL) or 1700mm AFL, if obstructed.

Consequently, ordinary window handles on such high level vents do not meet building control requirements and alternative opening control methods should be considered. The regulations clearly specify that if the window controls cannot comply, then an alternative remote electrical or safe manual solution should be provided.

At SE Controls, we provide a range of solutions for the operation of high level windows; using push button operated electrical actuators, either stand-alone or linked to automatic indoor air quality monitors, such as our NVLogiQ system, or via a manual winding mechanism. We can also provide assistance to help designers specify the most appropriate solution.

Whatever method is used, windows still provide a simple, effective and economic route to air quality and temperature management, whilst allowing the all important ability for them to be controlled by building’s occupants.

Ventilation is not just about ensuring that fresh air can enter a building, but enabling contaminants to be removed, or at least diluted, to improve overall air quality. Although there are numerous methods of improving air quality, just opening a window is one of the easiest and most accessible, but it must be compliant.
