The Automatic Door Suppliers Association (ADSA) has secured not one but two ISO accreditations – 9001 45001– a significant achievement that underscores its commitment to excellence in both quality management and occupational health and safety.

ISO 9001 certification is a globally recognised standard for quality management systems (QMS). It demonstrates an organisation’s ability to consistently provide services that meet customer and regulatory requirements while striving for continuous improvement. In achieving this, ADSA has validated its robust processes and dedication to delivering superior value to its members and stakeholders.

Likewise, ISO 45001 is the international standard for occupational health and safety management systems (OHSMS). It provides a framework for organisations to manage risks and improve health and safety at work, reducing workplace incidents and enhancing employee well-being.

“Achieving ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certifications is a testament to our unwavering commitment to quality and safety,” said ADSA MD Ken Price. “These accolades reflect our dedication to maintaining the highest standards in our operations and our ongoing efforts to promote safe and responsible practices within the automatic door industry.”

He highlighted that ADSA had embarked on a “rigorous journey” to achieve these standards:

“It has been a challenging process which has taken more than a year to achieve. We have held up a mirror to our own processes, identified gaps and areas for improvement, and put improvements in place. As an organisation that helps establish and maintain quality and safety standards in the automatic door industry, we felt it was important to apply the same level of scrutiny to our own operations.”

ADSA’s ISO journey involved a comprehensive evaluation of its management systems, including audits by an independent certification body. The association’s adherence to these standards, ensures that it operates with efficiency, consistency and maintains a focus on continuous improvement.

This dual certification not only strengthens ADSA’s reputation as a leader in the automatic door industry but also provides significant benefits to its members. It assures them that the association operates with a strong emphasis on quality and occupational health and safety, fostering trust and confidence in its services and initiatives.

As ADSA moves forward, it remains committed to upholding these standards and driving positive change within the industry.

The Automatic Door Suppliers Association (ADSA) has launched its new website, boasting improved functionality with a brand-new look and feel.

The site has been produced to maximise user experience, with slicker mechanisms for booking courses and events, a member search facility with postcode and mapping features for customers to find products and service providers.

The association’s online presence, www.adsa.org.uk has been developed to reflect its current activity: extensive learning and development content, industry news and updates and independent compliance assessment services.

It offers a fresh new look, with a rolling home page and enhanced connectivity through third party app integration for improved booking/payment processes. It also incorporates social media feeds.

The site has greater clarity and is more intuitive: the online membership application process has been fully digitised and course/event bookings have a calendar interface to allow users to sync events with their own diaries.

ADSA has also included a shop… by public demand. Members asked the association to produce a range of branded workwear which can be personalised with company/name alongside their ADSA credentials.

The clothes range, which includes tee shirts, polos, shirts, fleece jackets and work trousers, has been produced using environmentally friendly/sustainable materials. Profits from the sale of branded merchandise will be reinvested into learning development – benefitting members in all respects.

Ken Price, ADSA’s Managing Director, said that the redevelopment of the site provided a chance to “review, refocus, and plan for the future”.

“The previous iteration of the site was functional but had started to look a little dated. We wanted to present a new window to the world which said more about the organisation we have become, was easier to use and provided members with new added benefits.

“We think that we have achieved that with a platform that has the scope to incorporate new initiatives and digital services as they continue to be launched.”

The Automatic Door Suppliers Association (ADSA) is taking part in a ground-breaking initiative to increase levels of competence and confidence in the UK building envelope sector.

The Joint Competence Initiative (JCI) has been established in response to the Building Safety Act – considered the most significant change to health and safety legislation affecting the construction industry in the past 40 years

The JCI is an “association of associations” providing guidance and support to move forward industry standards and raise the bar higher.

ADSA was invited to represent the doors sector as part of the JCI steering group along with other trade associations, including Council for Aluminium in Building (CAB), Glass & Glazing Federation (GGF), the Centre for Window and Cladding Technology (CWCT) and Society of Façade Engineers (SFE). They are joined by representatives of leading contractors, sub-contractors, manufacturers and suppliers and education providers such GQA Qualifications Ltd.

Ken Price, ADSA’s managing director, said that it was an honour to be involved in an initiative which would

“radically reform and improve quality and standards throughout the industry.”

“It has brought together leading associations which have responsibilities in establishing and maintaining competence levels within their own sectors. By working together, we have been able to define what competence looks like, how we measure and achieve it against specific roles and requirements.

“We have shared the work which we have undertaken individually and helped contribute to a bigger picture of competence. Moving forward, we have pledged to drive through change against a recognised set of standards that relate to different parts of the industry: subcontractors, specifiers, manufacturers, etc, and identify the kind of training and continuous professional development that is required to prove competence.”

JCI was initially formed of technical and procurement leads from BAM, ISG, Kier, Laing O’Rourke, Lendlease, Mace, Morgan Sindall, Multiplex, Sir Robert McAlpine, John Sisk, Skanska and Wates Group. Its vision has been to establish, “proportionate and practical requirements relating to both organisational and individual competence of those working in the glazing, cladding and roofing sectors”. This has led to the publication of a white paper, ‘Achieving Competence in the Building Envelope Sector’.

Said JCI chair, Neville Grunwald:

“JCI will consult with Principal Contractors and Developers to adopt the white paper as the preferred measure of subcontractor competence as part of the supply chain process.  In order to maintain the currency of these measures, the volunteers and associations of the JCI will continue to interact with Government bodies and other stakeholders to monitor changes in laws and regulations surrounding the issue of competence in the Built Environment and lobby them to ensure those laws and regulations are proportionate and applied in a practicable manner.”

The Automatic Doors Suppliers Association (ADSA) can now be found in the Employer Directory, run by the government-backed Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education (IfATE), which aims to heighten industry alignment between apprenticeships and occupational needs.

The inclusion rubber-stamps ADSA’s position in spearheading professional standards and its role in developing a future workforce for the automatic door industry.

ADSA had to meet a rigorous criterion to gain its place in the directory and evidence:

  • governance structure
  • responsibilities
  • relevant statutory functions
  • identify board members and their roles across a range of employers
  • employers with whom is works
  • number of members from across the sector

It also had to demonstrate its experience and capability to fulfil its role as an occupational expert and ensure that no conflicts of interest would prevent it from operating as such.

Directory entrants need to submit written submissions for assessment, with successful candidates attending a seminar on their role within the partnership at the end of September.

The directory is intended to promote industry input in the evaluation of apprenticeship end point assessments (EPA). It highlights the importance of partnerships with industry recognised professional organisations.

ADSA Managing Director Ken Price said:

“We were thrilled to be invited to submit an application to become a partner organisation within the Employer Directory. It reflects our many years of hard work in developing the Powered Pedestrian Door Technician Apprenticeship – from trailblazer to supporting the colleges which deliver it.

“Our inclusion will help ADSA progress the aims of our industry by enabling us to work with organisation such as Ofqual and the Office for Students, contribute to end point assessment organisation forums and discussion groups, and support efforts to improve external quality assurance.”

Ian Steward, Employer Directory Manager at IfATE, added:

“We are delighted to welcome ADSA to the Employer Directory. We firmly believe that partnerships with industry recognised professional organisations gives evaluation of the quality of apprenticeship assessment added credibility and recognition as a genuine test of occupational competence.”

Four cohorts of PPD Technician Apprenticeships have been commenced with a fifth starting in May.
