Zentia’s acoustic ceilings star in a Glasgow landmark.

Mineral ceiling tiles by leading UK manufacturer Zentia have played an instrumental part in the redevelopment of Glasgow’s historic Grade A listed Custom House.

Some 3,500m2 of Zentia’s Ultima+ range features in the public circulation and corridor areas of both the Clayton hotel and the Adagio aparthotel built by main contractor McAleer Rushe as part of the £52 million landmark restoration scheme which opened in November 2022.

It was the first time architects Leach Rhodes Walker had worked with Zentia products.

Steven Allcock, senior project leader at LRW, said:

“The scheme was challenging in several ways. Firstly, we had to deal with the existing listed building and incorporate it within the overall scheme. Then there were the acoustics. With it being located next to a railway line, the building had to be designed to be isolated to avoid sound transference throughout the structure. And then there was movement tolerance of +/- 50mm in two directions and +/- 25mm in the opposite two directions.”

Ultima+ tegular-edged mineral ceiling tiles were fixed on a Prelude 24 TLS grid by specialist sub-contractors CCL Interiors. Manufactured with up to 64% recycled content and up to 100% recyclable, the Ultima+ range is available in three core densities that allow specifiers to engineer sound absorption and attenuation for optimum and balanced acoustic performance.

CCL director Ross McGonigle said:

“The Ultima+ product provided a smooth, finely-textured, clean white finish, adding brightness to the corridors whilst providing good sound absorption to the public circulation areas.”

The distributor was SIG (Eurocentral).

DL Mechanical is a Nottingham-based business specialising in plumbing and pipe fitting engineering services. The company works with a broad portfolio of clients in the commercial and educational sectors designing, engineering and installing new pipework for water, steam & condense, oil and gas, soil and vent, rainwater among a range of other services.

An FE college in Nottinghamshire called on DL Mechanical’s expertise to advise on a change of use project that would improve the facilities for mechanics apprentices. Changing a classroom to a workshop required the installation of a wash down area. A site survey confirmed that no drains were in the immediate vicinity of the required area, so an alternative solution was found.

With advice from local plumbers’ merchant, Willbond, a Saniflo Sanispeed+ grey water lifting station was specified to discharge the water from the new washdown area. With its robust 400-watt motor and low activation level of 95mm, the unit was connected to a Zip water heater and the washdown areas to discharge hot and cold waste water through small bore pipework up 3m to an adjoining pipe. This ran by gravity to a soil and vent pipe some 60m away.

Terry Fisher, Mechanical Contracts Manager at DL Mechanical, oversaw the project;

“The Sanispeed+ pretty much enabled the project to go ahead. Bar drilling a bore hole – which would have been prohibitively expensive – a pumped solution was the only way forward. The Saniflo unit is a simple plug and play solution, so proved easy to install and it has been working efficiently and effectively from day one.”

The Sanispeed+ is ideal for pumping waste water from appliances and sinks in light commercial applications and with four inlets it connects to a range of appliances. It has a working temperature of 35°C but can handle temperatures up to 75°C for short periods. It has a quiet motor and can be installed below counters or in cupboards out of sight if required.

All Lindapter CE Marked products are now additionally UKCA Marked to ensure continued compliance with both EU and UK Construction Products Regulations.

Being one of the first companies in the UK in its industry to gain both a CE and UKCA Mark via the ETA/UKTA route, Lindapter further demonstrates its commitment to quality and transparency of product performance by increasing the number of independent accreditations. This provides further reassurance to construction professionals working with Lindapter as product performance is independently tested and confirmed.

As the United Kingdom (UK) continues its exit from the European Union (EU), it has adopted new regulatory frameworks to replace those enforced by the EU. The new UKCA Mark will be a mandatory requirement in Great Britain (England, Scotland, and Wales) for all previously CE Marked products.

The government has extended the deadline for accepting CE Marking for construction products from the original 1 January 2023 to the new date of 30 June 2025. The statement just extends the time during which the CE Mark will be recognised and does not postpone the introduction of the UKCA Mark for construction products introduced to the GB market.

Further information on the UK Construction Products Regulation, including the latest updates, can be found on the Government website: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/construction-products-regulation-in-great-britain

CE Marking is still in effect in Northern Ireland since the territory is in line with the European Union’s single market for goods. For products placed on the market in Northern Ireland, Lindapter continues its third-party conformity assessment by an EU Technical Assessment Body to demonstrate compliance with the relevant standards, therefore we will continue to affix the CE Mark to these products.

As part of Lindapter’s efforts to demonstrate compliance with the new regulation, the company commissioned a UK Approved Body to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of its Factory Production Control System. The latest Certificates and Declaration of Performance/Conformity documents for both CE and UKCA Mark can be downloaded from www.lindapter.com

Being one of the first in the construction industry to obtain both CE and UKCA Mark via the ETA/UKTA route has allowed Lindapter to accelerate its expansion ahead of its competitors as the company continues its tradition of proactively responding to market changes.

TRILUX Elevates the Shopping Experience

with Cutting-Edge Lighting Solutions

for Leading British Retailer

TRILUX’s new lighting concept for Marks and Spencer food halls was designed to create a “bigger, better, fresher” shopping experience and bring the market feel to life. The black finish of the custom designed luminaire blends into the ceiling, allowing the focus to be on the produce.

Marks and Spencer, a leading British retailer, wanted to bring a fresh, new look to its Food Halls. With a requirement to make the spaces feel like a market and not a conventional supermarket, TRILUX was brought on board to design the lighting concept. The new 75,000 sq ft Stevenage store, which opened in April 2022, showcases the concept and is one of the first in the country to feature the new design.

Invisible light

Traditional supermarket lighting is bright, white, and uniform. Marks and Spencer’s original lighting scheme centred around this concept with a highly visible frosted plastic lens, which TRILUX replaced with a new lighting system based on its popular E-Line continuous line. The key difference here, is that the customised luminaire features a black profile with a recessed LED light source to create the illusion of no visible light until customers are directly under the fitting. The light is evenly distributed on products, not the floor, using a double asymmetric distribution.

The modularity of the E-Line system allows spotlights to be integrated wherever needed, with the flexibility to move later, with little to no cost.

The selected optics light the vertical faces of the shelving units uniformly, while wall washing techniques were used to highlight the signage and areas above the merchandise to make the space feel welcoming.

Guiding customers with pockets of interest

TRILUX’s black E-Line trunking system is arranged in single continuous lines to align with the store’s aisles and includes B.Veo spotlights and Grado wall washers, giving a less cluttered ceiling appearance.

Each area of the food hall was carefully thought out to create pockets of interest and guide the customer through the shopping experience.

Spotlights and wall washers – key lighting techniques

Spotlighting is used to highlight key features such as aisle signage, wine tables, cheese barges and coffee grinding, to name a few, while wall washing techniques are used around the perimeter of the aisles to define the atmosphere of each space. For example, in the Beer, Wines and Spirits section, the intention is to create a moodier atmosphere. Hence, the wall washers are positioned lower on the product, and only the illuminated signage lights the walls above the shelving.

In other areas, the wall washers are aimed above the shelving units and illuminate decorative wall features, providing a lighter and airier environment and increasing the perception of the height of the area.

Adding pendant lighting into the mix

The horticulture section has a large decorative corkboard wall lit using the same wall washing techniques, with the added interest of striking pendants to break up the space. In contrast, the large fresh produce counters have rafts of large, suspended opal diffuser panels in arrangements of banks of 4, 6 or 8 panels.

Highlighting the till ends

Finally, where the experience becomes transactional, the tills are lit using a frosted lens, separating the space with linear lines over the cash registers, including a spotlight on the ends to illuminate the point-of-sale units.

TRILUX’s lighting design has helped transform Marks and Spencer food halls into an inviting, market-style shopping experience. The TRILUX scheme has been installed at 10 – 15 sites so far, the plan is to roll out the concept in all new stores.

Stone wool insulation manufacturer, ROCKWOOL®, has added to its suite of industry support resources with the launch of the Recladding with ROCKWOOL guide for specifiers.

Following the ban on combustible materials in relevant new buildings over 18 metres (ADB updated for England June 2022), many building owners are recladding existing buildings with non-combustible materials that comply with the updated regulations.

In addition to addressing combustibility regulations, recladding brings many benefits to existing buildings, including improved thermal and acoustic performance, enhanced aesthetic qualities and the replacement of flat roof systems that have reached the end of their effective operation.

The Recladding with ROCKWOOL guide includes ROCKWOOL stone wool products, such as NyRock® Rainscreen 032 and NyRock® Frame Slab 032, which are purpose-designed for ventilated rainscreen cladding. They are also independently classified as either A1, or A2-s1, d0 and therefore non-combustible, meaning that they are suitable for use on buildings that are affected by the ban on combustible materials.

With fire resistance designed into ROCKWOOL roof board products, details of ROCKWOOL flat roof solutions – such as HARDROCK® Multi-Fix – are also included within the guide.

ROCKWOOL has a dedicated recladding team in place, reinforcing the company’s commitment to supporting the industry with the remedial action needed to address fire safety and other issues for the thousands of buildings in the UK which fall short of required standards.

Heading up this team is Hedley Thompson, Recladding and Façades Sector Manager at ROCKWOOL. Commenting on the new guide, he says:

“The recladding sector faces considerable challenges to ensure that existing buildings meet the regulatory standards required today. This new guide offers valuable support for specifiers, providing an overview of the ROCKWOOL ventilated rainscreen and flat roof ranges in one place, along with all of the relevant technical information and fire standards data.”

The guide is the latest recladding resource to be developed by ROCKWOOL, adding to its existing suite of specification materials which also includes its Retrofitting Rainscreen Insulation and Cladding CPD (Continuing Professional Development) which launched earlier this year. The module explains the benefits of retrofitting insulation and clarifies why retrofitting can be better than demolishing and rebuilding from new.

Chris Goggin details construction projects and financial funding directly related to future widespread UK hydrogen usage. Customers of energy and all related products will be provided with insight into projects that involve hydrogen use and production by big business inside the UK and EU.

Future UK energy options will be clean, domestically sustainable and free from market interference. Low carbon alternatives will be gradually introduced in replacement of environmentally harmful fossil fuels. A form of future energy that fulfils a low carbon criteria and can be domestically manufactured is hydrogen.

The UK government has recently released their latest report detailing a future approach to hydrogen dispersal. In brief, present calculations for the use of hydrogen as an upcoming UK energy option will be limited to decarbonising hard to reach sectors of industry and transport. If scientific data that proves hydrogen adoption yields beneficial results, hydrogen could be used to heat domestic and commercial properties.

Various hydrogen projects are being pursued, constructed and installed by leading international energy companies such as Shell and BP as well as several other large UK energy operators.

Spanish renewable energy company Iberdrola will invest €170 million in constructing and developing a green hydrogen facility at Felixstowe, England’s largest port. Manufacturing capacity will be around 14,000 tons a year with the ambition to double this figure in the near future. All green hydrogen that is produced will be used to power port vehicles and machinery.

Norwegian state-owned oil and gas company Equinor has submitted a bid for UK governmental funding of £16 million with the aim of constructing a second blue hydrogen facility in the Humber region of England. A final investment decision will be made in 2025.

The Hydrogen to Humber (H2H) Production 2 site will be located close to Equinor’s H2H Saltend project – another blue hydrogen facility. Operations will begin in 2028 if the construction and approving processes are not complicated by unforeseen events.

Both Saltend and Humber projects will use natural gas to produce blue hydrogen and utilise CCUS technology (Carbon Capture & Underground Storage) that will detain a vast majority of created emissions. Equinor also received £8.4 million in governmental funding, a figure matched by private investments to begin Saltend construction.

Another big company hoping to deliver a hydrogen production facility is UK oil and gas company BP. BP has submitted plans to the UK government detailing their vision in constructing and running a green hydrogen hub that will supply clean energy to local industry, businesses and homes.

BP’s HyGreen Teesside project will be located in the Northeast of England. Production and distribution of green hydrogen will be targeted for 2025. MOU’s (Memorandum of Understanding) have been agreed with potential local buyers of end-product green hydrogen, signalling large demand.

One such MOU has been signed with Northern Gas Networks (NGN). BP and NGN will see 2,000 local homes and businesses powered by hydrogen from 2025. It is hoped that the installation of a regional hydrogen hub can assist in enabling a functioning hydrogen economy across the region and nation.

HyNet North West is a £750 million joint venture project that includes several big names such as Cadent, Essar Oil UK and Eni UK. Two blue hydrogen production facilities and CCUS technology will be constructed and inserted into Essar Oil’s Stanlow Refinery and be transported through yet to be assembled infrastructure.

HyNet’s hydrogen hub will contribute 80% of the UK’s 5GW low-carbon hydrogen target that will be utilized in industry, transport and domestic heating. All produced hydrogen will be distributed across Northwest England and North Wales. Operations could begin in 2025.

Two major European economies in The Netherlands and Germany have embraced hydrogen as a potential contributor towards decarbonising national energy resources. The Netherlands is in the process of retrofitting 136,000 km of natural gas pipelines to transport hydrogen for industrial and domestic consumption. The Netherlands “National Hydrogen Network” will be ready for operations in 2031.

Germany is encouraging large domestic industrial hydrogen transitions and residential hydrogen dispersal. German steel producer Salzgitter will spend €723m to replace industrial procedure involving coal with green hydrogen. The German government is also experimenting with trials that use hydrogen to heat properties.

European economies are keen on a switch to hydrogen. At present UK plans are not definitive on the role of hydrogen in the national energy transition, while an influx of data demonstrates the positive benefits of hydrogen usage into policymakers expanding its role in the UK energy transition.
