SMARTPLY ULTIMA is the next generation OSB4 panel launching 24th April 2019, from innovative timber panel manufacturer, MEDITE SMARTPLY.

Created with zero-added formaldehyde, as is standard across the range, SMARTPLY ULTIMA is the strongest most moisture resistant OSB4 panel ever produced by the company.

Ideal for use in the most demanding structural applications, SMARTPLY ULTIMA is perfect for offsite manufacturing and construction.

“SMARTPLY ULTIMA will define the new standard of OSB. Here we have the strongest, most moisture resistant panel when compared to alternate OSB solutions. Add that to our zero-added formaldehyde promise that we deliver across the SMARTPLY range and we believe it’s a real winner,” says Colin Wheatley, Product Manager at MEDITE SMARTPLY.

At a time where modern methods of construction demand ever stronger, more efficient, sustainable products, new panel technologies have a big part to play.

“The demand for scalable offsite construction is greater than ever. With new offsite factories emerging across the country, we wanted to deliver a panel that could meet the scale and structural demands required.

“SMARTPLY ULTIMA is the ultimate partner for offsite construction and applications where strength and moisture resistance are paramount.”

With a finish like no other OSB, SMARTPLY ULTIMA is made using precision strand orientation and continuous pressing technology, resulting in a smooth consistent finish.

SMARTPLY ULTIMA is available in large panel formats up to 2.8m wide by 7.5m long and to a maximum thickness of 40mm.

A state-of-the-art sports and learning centre in Cambridge features a dramatic space-defining acoustic based on the use of MEDITE PREMIER FR fire rated panels from MEDITE SMARTPLY.

The product was specified by architects Chadwick Dryer Clarke Studio (CDC) for acoustic panelling in the new sports hall for the prestigious Stephen Perse Foundation senior school.

“MEDITE SMARTPLY forms a benchmark for us,” explained Mr Mark Clarke, Director at CDC, “and we have no hesitation in specifying their brand for our projects.

“We chose MEDITE PREMIER FR MDF in particular for this project as it achieved the required fire performance, which is paramount for a school building. It is also suitably robust and easily formed to create the perforations required for its acoustic performance. The fact that the product is sustainably produced is also an important factor for us.”

The sports hall is part of a complete new building designed by CDC, combining sports facilities with new classrooms and social learning spaces – this mixed use made careful consideration of acoustic performance essential. The decision to use acoustic panelling as a solution then provided the opportunity to create an opulent interior that would not only be functional but inspiring.

Mr Clarke said: “We wanted the panelling to be able perform a dual role: to temper the reverberation times within the large volume of the hall, and provide a high-quality finish that would define the space.”

Within the sports hall, approximately 530 MEDITE PREMIER FR panels were installed at high level above a storey-high ‘plinth’ of concrete blockwork. They were finished in RAL 7044, a silk grey tone, which complemented the treated cross-laminated timber (CLT) finish in other areas. The same product was also used around the building for the creation of architraves, skirtings and window linings.

Within England, Building Bulletin 93 sets out performance standards for acoustics in schools. As building regulations also state that within schools or similar public buildings a Euroclass B or C fire rated panel must be used and MEDITE PREMIER FR offers the perfect solution.

“The FR panels are lined at the rear with a black fleece and glass-wool insulation,” Mr Clarke explains. “This 28% open area absorbs sound and reduces the reverberation time, greatly improving the quality of the environment within the space.”

A social working environment and a sense of community was central to the project: an important internal space that would become one of the main hubs of activity in the school. The whole school community, including governors, teachers and pupils, was consulted as part of the design development to ensure the right performance and aesthetic could be achieved.

Mr Clarke said: “The eventual building design solution sprang from conversations with the client team and a careful analysis of the opportunities of the site. It was like solving a puzzle: many of our projects share this problem-solving ethos. I was a challenge for all involved in its development and construction, but it has been very successful since handover and is proving to provide a highly satisfying new sequence of spaces for the school.”

The result is a functional, beautiful building, which uses calming colour and modern shapes to break up and add intriguing interest to the expanse of space within the immense, four-court sports hall.

In a significant move for the construction industry, MEDITE SMARTPLY, producers of innovative timber panel products, has signed a commitment as part of a consortium planning the construction of the world’s first Tricoya® wood chip acetylation plant. To be built in Hull, the plant will produce the raw material for the manufacture of MEDITE® TRICOYA® EXTREME, the market leading high performance wood panel.

The consortium is between MEDITE SMARTPLY, chemical technology group Accsys, venture capitalists BP Ventures and Acetyl industry leader BP Chemicals. The plant, due to come on stream in 2019, will produce Tricoya Wood Elements using Accsys’ proprietary technology for the acetylation of wood chips and particles.

These acetylated elements are used to manufacture the high performance MEDITE TRICOYA EXTREME Medium Density Fibre panels. The panels exhibit outstanding durability and dimensional stability which allow them to be used in exterior and wet area applications once limited to products such as concrete, plastics or metals. With the added benefits of light weight, sustainable raw materials and a guarantee of up to 50 years above ground and 25 years in ground, these revolutionary panels provide architects, specifiers and designers with an entirely new construction material, allowing great design flexibility and endless opportunities for creativity.

MEDITE TRICOYA EXTREME was launched in 2012 and demand has outstripped supply consistently since that time. With a buoyant building market and huge demand for this product, the factory will not come on stream a moment too soon for the team at MEDITE SMARTPLY.

Neil Foot, MEDITE SMARTPLY CEO, is clearly delighted with this development: “The commitment to develop this facility is a huge step forward, providing the opportunity to significantly increase our manufacturing volume and unlock interesting new markets where wood-based products would not previously have been applicable. It’s a very exciting development for the company and the construction industry as a whole.”

Two years in the planning, the €68 million venture will see the construction of a new factory adjacent to BP’s existing acetyls facility and the place where much of the original research and development into wood acetylation was carried out. Anticipating an accelerating demand, the consortium envisages constructing the plant in such a way that further capacity can be added to the site as required.

For MEDITE SMARTPLY this is a game-changing development, enabling the rapid development of the market for MEDITE TRICOYA EXTREME into a new era for the use of “high technology wood” in new applications.
