The premium thermal performance of Kingspan Kooltherm K106 Cavity Board has led to it being installed as part of the £440 million redevelopment of Westgate Oxford, a retail and leisure destination in the city centre.

Developed by the Westgate Oxford Alliance and constructed by Laing O’Rourke, the development is scheduled to open in October 2017. It has been designed by Glenn Howells Architects to reflect the heritage of the surrounding Oxford architecture, with an articulated brick façade and a focus on long-term robustness, quality and endurance. This concept was carried throughout the project, leading to the selection of the Kingspan Kooltherm K106 Cavity Board to ensure the building achieved a high level of thermal performance within a minimal cavity width.

Installed by Kilnbridge Construction Limited on the stair cores at each level, the rigid insulation board has a thermal conductivity of just 0.018 W/m·K, whilst its water-tight, vapour-open polypropylene fleece outer facing allows it to be installed with a 10 mm residual cavity. This combination makes it ideal for projects such as Westgate Oxford, where developers want to meet demanding U-value targets, without moving away from preferred cavity sizes and reducing the internal space.

The Oxford development is expected to achieve a minimum BREEAM rating of ‘Excellent’ for Block 1. Kingspan Kooltherm K106 Cavity Board can assist, both directly and indirectly, towards the award of credits within the Energy and Materials sections of the assessment. All Kooltherm, Therma and KoolDuct insulation products and cavity closers manufactured at Kingspan Insulation’s facilities in Pembridge and Selby are certified to BES 6001 (Framework Standard for the Responsible Sourcing of Construction Products) ‘Excellent’.

Kingspan Kooltherm K106 Cavity Board is BBA certified. Its rigid phenolic fibre-free insulation core is manufactured with a blowing agent that has zero Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) and very low Global Warming Potential (GWP). The insulation boards are non-deleterious, easy to handle and install, and are unaffected by air infiltration.

Holiday-home owners at Haggerston Castle Holiday Park in Northumberland will be relaxing in style this summer at the Park’s new owners’ lounge, constructed from the Kingspan TEK Building System of Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) during the short off-season period.

The Haven holiday park is situated within the lush former grounds of Haggerston Castle, with its award-winning landscape gardens and picturesque lakes. Designed with guidance from Hill Cannon to complement its lakeside position, the new owners’ lounge offers a light and modern multifunctional space with a bar, restaurant and outdoor terrace. Kingspan TEK Delivery Partners, SIP Build UK, erected the Kingspan TEK Building System to form both the walls and roof of the lounge. Chris Duckworth, Managing Director of the company, discussed the specification:

“It was vital for the new owners’ lounge to be fully complete and ready to welcome guests by the end of the closure season in March. That gave us five months, over the worst of the winter weather, to get the build completed. The Kingspan TEK Building System really comes into its own in these conditions. We pre-cut the SIPs to the project’s exact specifications in our factory. As a result, the delivery was carefully scheduled in advance and once we arrived on site, our team were able to erect the system with virtually no alterations. The panelised design meant there was no need to wait for wet trades to dry and we were able to erect the main shell in just two weeks. Once we had the shell erected and a membrane applied, the building was weathertight meaning the first fix could begin internally whilst the external cladding was being applied.”

In alignment with Haven’s dedication to preserving the natural environment, the excellent fabric performance of the Kingspan TEK Building System should also help to reduce the facilities’ energy requirements. The highly insulated core of the 142 mm Kingspan TEK Building System panels can allow them to achieve U-values of 0.20 W/m2.K and below, whilst the OSB/3 facing and unique jointing system help to minimise unnecessary air loss.

Both the Kingspan TEK Cladding Panel and Kingspan TEK Building System panels are also available in a 172 mm thickness, delivering U-values of 0.17 W/m2.K or better, without the need for additional insulation. The manufacturing facility where the panels are produced carries both FSC® (FSC®-C109304) and PEFC Chain of Custody certification.

Kingspan Insulated Panels’ continual commitment to responsible business practices has been recognised with the achievement of BES 6001: Responsible Sourcing of Construction Products certification.

Developed by BRE Global, the standard provides an exacting framework of issues manufacturers must address to ensure responsible sourcing of construction materials. This includes organisational governance and supply chain management, in addition to environmental and social elements.

All wall and roof panels manufactured at Kingspan Insulated Panels’ Holywell and Sherburn manufacturing facilities have been certified to BES 6001 ‘Very Good’, with particular success in the Greenhouse Gas and Resource Use categories of the scoring table. This provides clear assurance that the products are constructed from raw materials which meet the highest levels of responsible sourcing practice. Additionally, the BES 6001 certification means that the Kingspan Insulated Panels products can also contribute towards the award of credits within BREEAM assessments.

Phil Smith, Managing Director at Kingspan Insulated Panels, commented on the achievement “It is becoming increasingly important for businesses to be able to demonstrate responsible practice in all aspects of their work. We are immensely proud to see our products meet the BES 6001 standard and, using the feedback from the process, we are looking forward to further develop our approach.”

South Shields is benefitting from a £16 million cultural centre featuring an iconic circular façade created with the Kingspan TEK Cladding Panel.

Contractors Bowmer & Kirkland have overseen the project, named ‘The Word, National Centre for the Written Word’. The three-storey structure designed by FaulknerBrowns Architects, includes library and exhibition space, IT suite, 3D printers, and café. The development, completed in October 2016, is part of a £100 million regeneration masterplan which partners South Tyneside Council with Muse Developments.

Creating a curved structure can pose a challenge, but the Kingspan TEK Cladding Panel was successfully engineered to provide a smooth, highly insulated exterior envelope. To achieve this, the structural insulated panels (SIPs) were designed and factory cut into narrow widths. This allowed them to be quickly and easily fixed to the concrete frame.

Steve McIntyre, Partner at FaulknerBrowns, explained their vision for the project: “The form and design approach of this iconic building seeks to establish a new benchmark in terms of quality of design, use of materials, and integration of public realm within the wider urban fabric of South Shields. This circular form encourages pedestrian movement between the Town Centre and the Riverside as well as having a striking and contemporary presence. The circular construction achieved with the Kingspan TEK Cladding Panel helped us to accomplish the concept of the spreading pages of a book.”

The 142 mm Kingspan TEK Cladding Panel installed on ‘The Word’ can help to achieve U-values of 0.20 W/m2.K or better whilst its OSB/3 facing and unique jointing system helps to minimise unnecessary air loss. The manufacturing facility where the panels are produced carries both FSC® (FSC®-C109304) and PEFC Chain of Custody certification. Also, there are constructions available that correspond to BRE Global Green Guide generic elements which achieve a Summary Rating of A+.

Councillor John Anglin, Lead Member for Regeneration and Economy at South Tyneside Council, said: “The new building needed to reflect our Sustainable Development goals, which is why we opted for low environmental impact and sustainable materials with a Green Guide rating of A or A+ whenever we could. This is to help us with our target of receiving a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating. We were also keen to ensure all timber used on the library was FSC® certified or equivalent.”

Both the Kingspan TEK Cladding Panel and Kingspan TEK Building System panels are now available in a 172 mm thickness, achieving even lower U-values of 0.17 W/m2.K or better.

GP practice staff in Aberdeen city are enjoying a new and improved environment at their purpose-built facility, with the help of the Kingspan OPTIM-R Balcony & Terrace System.

Woodside Fountain Health Centre is a bespoke build replacing the Woodside Medical Group’s premises on Western Road. The triple primary care facility offers a collaboration of services within the fully accessible building. The new health centre is comprised of 12 consulting rooms, a minor procedures room, treatment rooms, an NHS dental practice, and a team of community nurses. The project was overseen by contractors Miller Construction, which was acquired by Galliford Try in 2014.

The centre features a spacious roof terrace. To insulate this, whilst also maintaining an even transition from the internal area, 30 mm thickness of the Kingspan OPTIM-R Balcony & Terrace System was specified. Unlike conventional insulation, Kingspan OPTIM-R panels feature a microporous core which is evacuated, encased and sealed in a gas-tight envelope. This design allows the panels to achieve outstanding insulation performance with an aged thermal conductivity of 0.007 W/m.K, enabling the target U-value of 0.15 W/m2.K to be achieved with the slimmest possible construction. A further layer of Kingspan Styrozone was installed above the System, followed by a waterproof membrane and the final balcony surface.

The Kingspan OPTIM-R Balcony & Terrace System also includes OPTIM-R flex infill strips which can be cut to size, ensuring the System can meet all design requirements. When installed to Kingspan Insulation’s guidelines, the Kingspan OPTIM-R Balcony & Terrace System can provide outstanding long term thermal performance over the lifetime of a building.

Kingspan OPTIM-R has a BDA Agrément® certification for thicknesses of 20-40 mm. BDA Agrément® is recognised by professional bodies such as the NHBC and LABC, which can fast-track approvals and offers an assurance that the products are safe and effective.
