A smart hub that let’s you take control of door, window and safety systems is being launched by GEZE UK at the Smart Buildings Show, (7-8 November 2018) at the Barbican, London.

GEZE Cockpit acts as ‘a brain’ – intelligently integrating door, window and safety technology into building management systems – and giving building designers greater options to create the next generation of smart buildings.

The hi-tech system, which is the first of its kind, uses the latest technology with open interfaces, and can be seen in operation on the GEZE UK stand, in Hall 2, Stand F3.

Offering more efficiency, security and convenience, combined with intelligent smoke and heat extraction and dynamic fire protection to protect targeted escape routes, the GEZE Cockpit can be used as stand-alone solution or integrated into an over-arching building management system (BMS).

With its open BACnet standard integration, GEZE Cockpit can be managed remotely using a PC, tablet or smartphone, providing flexible control via an IO 420 interface.

It can monitor external and internal temperatures and provide CO2 management – automatically opening vents to dissipate stale air and allow fresh air into the building to improve conditions for those inside.

GEZE Cockpit also features a night time ventilation programme which can reduce internal temperatures and provide the ideal climate for those entering the building in the morning. The system works with any autonomous ventilation system that the building may have in place and can also work alongside any mechanical system.

In a fire situation, GEZE Cockpit can quite literally be a life saver. It enables the automatic release of escape routes, opening doors and clearing emergency exits to provide a faster escape for people in the building.

GEZE Cockpit can be fully integrated into any building management system using the BacNet protocol but also has its own application package which can be accesssed remotely using a range of devices.

GEZE UK will demonstrate some ‘joined up thinking’ when it takes part at this year’s Smart Buildings Show (7-8 November 2018) at the Barbican, London.

Its stand, F3, Hall 2, is a third bigger than last year and will feature the latest integrated products that can form part of intelligent building networks.

By using smart building interfaces such as the GEZE Cockpit, IQ box KNX or the IO 420, modular solutions can be applied to achieve natural ventilation and climate control, security and fire safety. In turn, they can be integrated into building management systems which ‘talk’ to each other for complete control – often remotely.

Using GEZE’s range of automatic door and window systems, these ‘hubs’ can transform premises into smart buildings – making them more pleasant environments in which to live and work – conditions that help people feel more happy, healthy and productive.

Said GEZE UK managing director, Kaz Spiewakowski: “Our presence at the UK’s leading dedicated smart building event will be bigger and better this year.

“We have some ground-breaking products to demonstrate and in GEZE UK’s 30th year, we wish to make our presence felt and become firmly established as the ‘go to’ supplier for those looking to create the next generation of buildings.”

As the only company in the UK to offer both door and window solutions, GEZE is keen to be at the forefront of the ‘smart revolution’ allowing building performance to be optimised, costs reduced and environments improved through responsive and multifunctional systems.

Visitors to the stand will see products such as the Slimchain, IO 420, IQ box KNX, IQ locks, WS 1000 touch screen controller, Flat scan sensor, the GEZE Cockpit – which will be available in the UK very soon – and a first look at the Perlan AUT NT, a cost-effective alternative to the manual sliding door system – ideal for use in difficult-to-access areas which can help reduce accidents.

GEZE UK is opening doors to more shoppers at Glasgow Fort which has opened a third phase of shops and leisure facilities at its out-of-town shopping and leisure complex.

With more than 100 outlets parking for 2,500, Glasgow Fort is noted for being one of the few purpose-built ‘uncovered’ shopping villages with a ‘two-sided mall design’ intended to recreate a traditional high street.

GGF-0418-0370(Wagamama)

That’s why installing the right doors were crucial in the design and specification of the new phase – not only to protect the new stores from the elements – but to maintain the fluidity of the stainless steel and glass aesthetic within its horseshoe layout.

The latest 175,000 sq ft extension – designed by Glasgow architects Cooper Cromar for owner British Land – includes an 80,000 sq ft Marks & Spencer department store housed within an iconic three-storey stainless steel-clad pavilion.

GGF-0418-0487

The store entrance has four sets of automatic sliding doors, powered by GEZE’s Slimdrive SL NT operators, to form a draught lobby and display area. The Slimdrive SL NT blends seamlessly into the uncluttered glazed frontage. With an operator height of just 7cm – it is almost invisible, virtually silent in operation and can move leaf weights of up to 125kg – ideal for buildings with high levels of footfall and a continuous flow of people moving in various directions.

GEZE UK

GEZE UK worked with Gray & Dick Ltd and Greenfield Contracting to create the entrances for M&S and seven other shops and restaurants on the north of the site where the new development is located. They include:

  • Fat Face
  • Footasylum
  • JD Sports
  • Mamas & Papas
  • River Island
  • Wagamama
  • Waterstones

In total 12 of GEZE products were supplied. In most cases the Slimdrive SL NTs were used to create the entrances for the units. Fat Face, Footasylum and Mamas & Papas, River Island, Wagamama and Waterstones chose seamless entrances, each with a pair of automatic sliding doors which provided flow and continuity with their glazed façades.

For JD Sports, a much larger unit, two Slimdrive SLT telescopic automatic sliding door operators were used to create two entrances across the span of its frontage – each fixed to glass. Like the Slimdrive SL NT, they operate quietly and boast an elegant drive design with a 7 cm operator height.

Said Martin Revie, general manager for GEZE UK in Scotland: “This was a fascinating project on which to work. Glasgow Fort has become a ‘go-to’ destination for shopping and leisure in the region as it combines great facilities, with an open and airy environment and contemporary design.

“The third phase of the development needed to combine the requirements of the businesses going into the new premises and incorporate functionality, safety and security while retaining the aesthetic values of the development as a whole.”

GEZE products are giving students access to the highs and lows of student life in a development which incorporates a 21-storey tower block and three low-rise residences.

Chamberlain Hall – part of University of Birmingham’s Vale Village scheme – saw the replacement of the 50-year-old Eden Town, known as High Hall and its associated wings – with new purpose-built accommodation.

It provides a home-from-home for 725 students in either en-suite study bedrooms in clusters of five or six, which share a kitchen/lounge – or self-contained studios.

GEZE products were used throughout the development. Every bedroom and circulation door, more than 800 in total, is fitted with a TS 3000 EC. This surface mounted door closer has a low opening force, requiring less energy to open it, making it a great choice for an educational building.

It adheres to strictest safety standards, and not only features an adjustable hydraulic latching action, closing force and closing speed, but also incorporates a sleek guide rail rather than an obtrusive arm to make it safer choice for residents.

Kitchen Doors were fitted with the TS 4000 EFS – a pinion toothed door closer with free swing arm function which enables people to go through the door while applying little physical force once the door has been initially opened. It has an electro hold-open function which ensures safe closing of the door in an event of a fire.

TS 5000 E closers were fitted to lobby doors. They are fitted with electro-mechanical hold-open devices which are released in the event of a fire closing the door safely. The TS 5000 E is suitable for doors up to 1400mm in width and has adjustable closing force, size EN 2-6, adjustable closing speed, hydraulic latching action and hydraulic back check.

Fifteen GEZE Slimdrive EMD-F electro-mechanical swing door operators were fitted to entrance doors and rooms for disabled students.

They are almost silent in operation, with the capacity to move large and heavy, single leaf doors with ease. The Slimdrive EMD-F operators are extremely durable which mean that they are the ideal low-maintenance solution for areas of heavy footfall such as student accommodation.

Students living in the tower benefit from lake-side views across the Vale, a Grade 2 historic park and garden, and those on the upper floors enjoy vistas right across the city. The three low rise blocks have been designed to sit at an angle maximising views across the Vale.

Said Andy Howland, GEZE’s director of sales and marketing: “A range of GEZE products has been used throughout this development to provide the ideal solution to a selection of doors that all need to perform different uses, in different areas of the building. The end result provides University of Birmingham students with quality, purpose-built accommodation, which is surrounded by nature whilst being in the heart of the city.”

University of Birmingham project manager, Daniel Holmes, said “It is always important in such a critical University project that we work with suppliers we can rely on. The GEZE products fit the bill and we are pleased with how they have performed.”

The revolution in indoor climate control and security spearheaded by smart technologies is the subject of a UK Construction Week seminar being given by GEZE UK’s head of window technology.
Spencer Allen for will share the spotlight with the likes of architect and television presenter George Clarke and representatives of the BRE, Carbon Trust and Sunday Times, during the showcase event, staged at the NEC Birmingham, 10 – 12 October.

He will explore the concept of smart natural air ventilation, how it works, outline its benefits and examine the findings of recent studies on its effects on workplace productivity and reducing ‘sick building syndrome’.

The session, which takes place at 2.30pm within the Smart Buildings Hub, on 10 October, will look at how smart solutions are used in life-saving buildings such as hospitals and how they can be used to save lives in the event of fire by allowing safe and smoke free escape.

It will also address security – eliminating ‘windows left open’ and the benefits of safe and secure night ventilation on buildings for optimum ‘next working day’ environments.
Said Spencer, GEZE UK’s National Sales Manager for Window Technology: “We spend 90% of our time indoors, so it’s not surprising that improving air quality inside buildings is in all our interests.

“With climate change resulting in ever-increasing temperatures and more frequent heatwaves within the UK, it is time that we looked at efficient ways of improving building ventilation which will require less energy usage.”

It may be small but it packs a punch! The launch of GEZE’s new sliding door system is a real David and Goliath affair. The Levolan 120 belies its modest appearance – the slimline fitting can effortlessly move internal doors of up to 120kg with elegant ease.

It has twice the load-bearing capacity of its “little brother”, the Levolan 60 which won the Plus X Award and was named the Best Product of 2014, in its category.

The Levolan 120 shares its discreet aesthetic: with straight lines and modular composition, it’s a system which is highly adaptable. Its sleek track, which is only 50mm high, includes integrated derailing protection and can be conveniently installed from the front.

This means that large panelled sliding doors – made from glass, wood, metal or plastic – which have interior design impact and a real “wow factor” can be put in place in the knowledge that their practical application can be effectively managed.

Additional safety is provided by the Levolan 120 SoftStop draw-in damping device which can be incorporated into the track as an option. The sliding door leaves are gently guided into their end position with little possibility of anything hitting the frame or risk of fingers being trapped.

The system has specially designed roller carriers which ensure outstanding load distribution enabling the leaves to move easily and almost silently. Its derailing protection is triggered automatically when the height of the door leaf is adjusted, ensuring that the best possible level of opening and closing is provided.

The clamping roller carriage is designed for glass thickness of 10 – 12.76mm which allows the Levolan 120 to be installed with door leaves made of laminated safety glass.

Its compact dimensions make is extremely versatile meaning it can be installed on a wall, suspended from a ceiling or glass fanlight or invisibly mounted within a ceiling.

The Levolan Smart fix installation system makes fitting fast and straightforward – just one Allen key and one open-ended spanner are needed to set the height of the cam – and the leaf and roller carriage can be mounted on the track and calibrated from the front.

Due to its modular composition, the Levolan 120 can be provided as ready-made sets configured to the customer’s needs or as individual parts.

The modular construction of the Levolan system also means that the parts for the Levolan 120 and the Levolan 60 are interchangeable – reducing the number of parts required for installing sliding door leaves of different weights and sizes.

Andy Howland, sales director of GEZE UK said the Levolan 120 was a “tiny powerhouse” capable of moving large sliding doors “easily and effortlessly”

“This Levolan 120 is an evolution to our existing award-winning interior sliding door system, with a phenomenal load movement capacity, modest in size and near silent in operation. We are confident that this product will be the ideal solution to large door leaf requirements which are currently very popular within contemporary interior design schemes.”
