A complete roof is resolved with Cembrit Moorland slates

High quality fibre cement slates from Cembrit have complemented the quality new build homes that David Wilson Homes has developed in South Wales. Providing a sleek and stylish finish, the dressed edge Moorland slates have made light work of a complex roofing project.

St Canna’s Green is a newly built David Wilson Homes development comprising 40 three, four and five bedroom properties. Located in the village of Llangan in South Wales, the homes have been carefully crafted to meet the needs to today’s lifestyles, delivering stylish, spacious, light and airy spaces that perfectly match modern lifestyle and aspirations. Multiple properties within the development feature complex roofing designs, with different roof pitches ranging from 35° to 45°, rafter pitches, dormer and rooflight windows requiring a roof covering that could accommodate these details.

Bridgend-based roofing company, Rooftop Tiling Ltd was appointed as the main contractor for this project. Having referred to the project requirements, the contractor recognised that the requirement for a roofing material that could be easily cut and installed on multi pitched roof designs. Whilst looking natural from the ground, Rooftop Tiling Ltd specified Cembrit Moorland dressed edge slates and sourced these products in 600mm x 300mm blue/black from its local builder’s merchant, Robert Price Ltd.

“David Wilson Homes is known to deliver high quality new builds which are aesthetically pleasing,” says Nick Pritchard, Commercial Manager at Rooftop Tiling Ltd. “We wanted to ensure we deliver this finish to the St Canna’s Green project by installing a visually attractive slate that could also handle the complex roof design. Moorland fibre cement slates are manufactured using Portland cement together with a non-asbestos formulation of blended synthetic and cellulose fibres. Each slate is pigmented during production and fully compressed. The edges are dressed and then the slates are finished with a high quality, semi-matt acrylic coloured coating to the top face and edges, and a clear binder to the back face.

Cembrit Moorland Slates are manufactured in accordance to BS EN ISO 9001: 2000 and BS EN 492: 2004 product specification for fibre cement slates and their fittings.

Glendyne complements prestigious new property

Cembrit Glendyne, a top of the range natural roofing slate from Canada, has added distinctive style, character and impressive performance to a newly built private house in Flintshire.

Situated in a well-established area of Northop Hall village in Flintshire, the newly built property is constructed to blend seamlessly into the surrounding countryside. The property is a four bedroom detached house which features an attractive pitched roof with five pediments, five velux windows, two valleys and some lower roof slopes.

Jewson, a leading builders’ merchant supplied 240m2 of Cembrit Glendyne to the project through its branch in Buckley. Having worked with Cembrit before, Flintshire-based roofing contractor, Daniel Crossley selected 508×254 blue-grey Cembrit Glendyne natural slates for the project and installed approximately 4,000 slates on the roof of the house and 500 on the garage roof. The slates have been fixed using copper nails in line with best practice for natural slate fixing and long-term durability of the roof.

“With all the gables and pitches, the roof was certainly a challenge from an installation point of view,” says Daniel Crossley. “We chose Glendyne for the project due to its consistency, as that makes it easier to install, as well as the aesthetic appearance and durability. The end result is impressive and Glendyne really brings out the character of the property.”

Glendyne is a high quality slate that combines first-class performance with all the inherent beauty of natural slate, making it the ideal ‘natural’ choice for specifiers and roofers. Available exclusively from Cembrit in the UK, Glendyne is a distinctive blue-grey colour. The Glendyne quarry is one of the most modern slate quarries in the world. The quarry operates a quality management system based on EN ISO 9001 which is externally audited. This standard is adhered to rigidly, as are all quality standard procedures required by each regional market the quarry supplies. Glendyne, like all natural slate from Cembrit, is tested to BS EN European standard, BS EN 12326-1:2014 which requires many of the laboratory tests (‘type testing’) to be performed at least annually and the factory production control (FPC) performed and recorded as a matter of routine by the producer.

Cembrit continues to expand its slates sales team

Cembrit, the leading roofing and cladding specialist, has announced two further additions to its UK sales force. Justin Ransted and Simon Porter have joined the pitched roof sales team to drive sales of natural and fibre cement slates in UK and South East England respectively.

Justin Ransted joins Cembrit UK as UK Sales Manager. With over 25 years’ experience in the construction industry, Justin brings with him a wealth of knowledge. He joins the company following roles at Icopal, Triton, Sika Ltd, Acheson & Glover Ltd and Hanson UK. As part of the sales team in all these roles, he was responsible for selling building products to contractors, property developers and self-builders.

Cembrit’s Brazilian scores on cricket ground

Two cricket teams in Nottingham now have a new home, thanks to Cembrit and its Alpina natural slates, as the aesthetically pleasing material has completed the look on a newly built cricket clubhouse.

Called the Field of Dreams, the new cricket clubhouse is based at the Meadows Recreation Ground in Nottingham’s Victoria Embankment. The project, which received a £150,000 Sport England grant, was the vision of the Trent Bridge Community Trust. With the original pavilion being old and dilapidated, the new clubhouse was built to provide four changing rooms, a kitchen, disability access, rooms for officials, and external viewing area.

Nottingham-based architect, Maber worked with construction giant, Willmott Dixon, while J Wright Roofing, was sub-contracted to provide an economical roofing system. Familiar with the benefits of Cembrit’s roofing products, J Wright Roofing specified and installed approximately 8,500 Alpina grey/green natural slates. Supplied quickly and efficiently via leading distributor of high-quality natural slates, East Midlands Roofing Supplies, the roof was installed within a month.

Using Cembrit Alpina natural roof slates is a breeze on the Devon coast

Cembrit’s Alpina natural slates have been used to great effect in the redevelopment of an award-winning holiday park in North Devon. The aesthetically pleasing material harmonises seamlessly with the coastal surroundings.

Located on the coast of North Devon, Woolacombe Bay Holiday Village is a seaside resort which lies at the mouth of a valley in the parish of Mortehoe. Voted as Britain’s Best Holiday Park in 2015, the development is a popular destination for family holidays. A recent construction project saw £4m redevelopment and extension of the resort’s entertainment complex. This included a brand new roof with the Cembrit Alpina slates providing an impressive, stylish roof covering.

Woolacombe Bay Holiday Village welcomes thousands of visitors every year, many attracted by its close proximity to the Tarka Trail and Combe Martin Wildlife and Dinosaur Park. The old entertainment complex was a listed, low rise (single storey) deep plan, flat roof, brick building constructed in the 1970s. Designed by Peregrine Mears Architects, the project presented an interesting design challenge – how to create a large building that is a suitable extension to a listed building. This called for a sensitive, imaginative design approach. In order to break up the mass of the building and at the same time, reflect something of the form of the original structure, a series of pitched roofs was created, with the form being influenced by the beach huts on nearby Woolacombe Beach.

Cembrit’s Alpina natural slates have been chosen due to their attractive appearance and long-lasting benefits. Barnstaple-based Roofing Contractor, DJT Roofing, specified and installed approximately 35,000 Grey/Green Cembrit Alpina natural slates on the multi-pitched roof. The company used the hook fixing method to secure the slates and lock them together tightly to achieve a neat finish.

“Being close to the coastline, resistance to wind lift was a major performance criterion for this substantial project,” comments Darren Todd, Owner, DJT Roofing. “Cembrit Alpina natural slates can withstand the most severe weather conditions and are unaffected by sunlight making them the perfect product for this type of coastal development. The design was also complicated and the Alpina slates were a joy to install, despite the challenges posed by the many pitches of the roof. Cembrit expands its sales team

Cembrit, the leading roofing and cladding specialist, has strengthened its UK sales force, with the appointment of two new regional sales managers. With experience in the roofing sector, Andrew Moore and Richard Evans will join the pitch roofing sales team, selling natural and fibre cement slates in the London and North Wales respectively.

Andrew Moore brings with him over thirty years of construction industry experience, having spent almost three years working with Monier Redland as an Account Manager and ten years with Jewsons as a National Account Manager. This wealth of experience will stand Andrew in good stead to increase Cembrit’s presence in the South East.

Cembrit BBA certified slates provide natural finish to new housing development

Jutland, smooth and Zeeland, textured BBA certified fibre cement slates from Cembrit, have demonstrated their versatility, design and performance features on a stylish, nature-inspired housing development in the seaside town of Weymouth.

Pemberly consists of 176 houses, townhouses, apartments and bungalows, varying from one bedroom to four bedrooms in size. While the development is centrally located and within walking distance to shops, schools, amenities, a community centre, library and local transport, it still offers a tranquil living space.

Poole-based building contractor, F.H.Cummings worked with roofing specialist, Weatherbury Roofing on this project. Having installed Cembrit slates in the past, the roofer specified Jutland and Zeeland fibre cement slates for the new build properties. Finding a roofing material that would blend in with the natural surroundings, accommodate the varying roof pitches and meet the high specification requirements was a challenge for the contractor.

“We have experience of working with a number of different roofing materials, and this allowed us to make an informed decision that fibre cement slates would be the best option for this project”comments Simon Coleman, Contracts Manager of Weatherbury Roofing. “Cembrit fibre cement slates are lightweight and pre-holed, two features that were beneficial to us. This, combined with the fact that these slates don’t require any grading or sorting, meant that we were able to speed up the installation process. The fact that Cembrit’s slates come in a variety of surface textures allows us to choose a slate for each design.”

Cembrit holds five BBA (British Board of Agrément) Certificates for its fibre cement slate range, ensuring that whichever system is chosen, roofers and architects can be confident in the specified product. To achieve this status, Cembrit fibre cement slates completed a comprehensive testing process and successfully met all the requirements set out by the BBA.

Jutland and Zeeland slates are manufactured to the highest European standards using Portland cement together with a formulation of superior blended synthetic and cellulose fibres. Cembrit B5 upgrades Penlan holiday homes

Cembrit B5 corrugated sheets have been installed on eight Swiss-style lodges at a holiday village in Swansea. The refurbishment of the roofs has updated the building, and provided a finish that exudes that holiday retreat feel.

Located in the heart of the beautiful Teifi Valley, Penlan Holiday Village is a small family run holiday park that is set amongst beautiful woodland and parkland. The development includes two and three bedroom detached lodges, a heated open-air swimming pool, picnic area, playing field and parking. The holiday village attracts many visitors throughout the year, as it provides quick access to the beautiful Teifi Valley and the West Wales Coastline.

Graham and Alistair Greenshield, the owners of Penlan Holiday Village wanted to replace the thirty year old roofs, as they were looking tired, and not performing very well. Graham chose to take on the job himself, and after looking at the options, decided to purchase Cembrit B5 corrugated sheets. Approximately 150 black coated B5 corrugated sheets have been installed on five lodges also utilising close-fitting one piece Cranked Crown Ridge to fit perfectly into the roof pitches.

“The exceptional quality of Cembrit’s B5 corrugated sheet helped us to enhance the exterior design of the lodges,” comments Graham Greenshield, part-owner of Penlan Holiday Village. “Time has been of the essence, considering the size of the project, and the fact that we didn’t want to close the business for too long. Cembrit’s B5 corrugated sheets have saved us a great deal of time, as it is quick and easy to install. In addition, its cost-effectiveness and design features ticked all the right boxes for us. I am not only pleased with the end result, but I enjoyed installing the product.”

The rust and rot free B5 Corrugated Sheet is the perfect solution for someone looking to clad or repair single-story buildings such as stables and garages. B5 is available in fourteen different lengths ranging from 4′ to 10′ 6″ the sheets are approximately 40% wider than traditional 3″ profile which allows for much better coverage per sheet. They also offer superior water shedding capacity due to the profile of its corrugations.

B5 offers numerous advantages that are helpful for the installer. B5 sheets have a small overlap, and as sheets are approximately 40% wider than comparative products, so it offers a much better coverage per sheet. This has the advantage of decreasing the weight of the roof covering. There is less side lap and overhang, and increased maximum end lap. B5 can be laid to a 5° pitch for small roof areas if the end laps are extended to 300mm and are double sealed with mastic strips. A number of accessories come with the B5. A one-piece close fitting Cranked Crown ridge that can fit into roof pitches, two-piece lose fitting ridge which is adjustable to roof pitches and the Plain Wing Angle ridge that can create high level ventilation. Also there is the Cemsix Barge Board which is used to close verges at gable ends and the one-piece and two-piece Roll Top Finial which forms an integral part of closing a verge apex.

BIM objects for roof slates and ridges from Cembrit

Following on from a successful launch for natural slates, Cembrit has added BIM objects for its fibre cement slates and fibre cement ridges to its growing portfolio. The new objects have been designed with the same attention to detail as the first group which were recently nominated in the Developers’ Choice BIM Object Awards 2015. This initiative is part of an ongoing process that will see the whole Cembrit product portfolio available as BIM objects.

Cembrit’s BIM objects contain detailed dimensions, product specifications and other key details, along with high quality 3D images to add into virtual model and simulated building designs. “We’ve been delighted with the reception our BIM objects have received from the specification community so far,” says Ged Ferris, Marketing Manager of Cembrit. “This latest release adds our versatile and well regarded fibre cement slates and key accessories, and so broadens the scope of our BIM object offering to encompass many more roofing design scenarios.”

The Cembrit range of fibre cement slates includes Westerland, Moorland, Zeeland, Jutland and Diamond, all offering their own unique appearance. The slates are ideal for use on conventional pitched timber roofs with a rafter pitch of 20° and over, or hung vertically as cladding on external walls. Cembrit: across the board coverage

Technical Editor, Bruce Meechan hears from Ged Ferris of Cembrit about the wide selection of board products the manufacturer can offer for internal and external construction applications.

The term one-stop-shop may be over used in the UK building products supply chain, but the range of boards offered by long-established manufacturer, Cembrit can provide specifiers with solutions to every sort of challenge from interior refurbishment and the creation of wet rooms within social housing units, to some of the most daunting logistical demands faced by burgeoning offsite or MMC sector.

The majority of the board options offer not just excellent physical characteristics, but a strong lineage and a long track record of service, both here and on the Continent.
As UK Marketing Manager, Ged Ferris, commented during our interview: “We have the product range to facilitate the needs of everyone from offsite system fabricators to refurbishment specialists and the growing self-build market.

Not just a Five-star range, but a range with five main stars and many product variations: Cembrit’s flat boards encompass all the key performance parameters including moisture resistance, fire resistance and structural strength, as well as providing a versatile substrate for commonly used finishes.

THE RANGE General purpose and specialist requirements solved by Cembrit’s boards

The product within the range which has shown the most rapid growth across the market is PB: a versatile tile backer or render backer board, mainly being used for the refurbishment of bathrooms, it is popular due to its low weight and ease of cutting which facilitates installation, and the robust long term performance. Cembrit has developed a version called Flex which can be fixed down to radii of just 150 mm. Both conventional PB and Flex features polystyrene spherules and an edge reinforcement detail that uses a special fabric allowing butt jointing and fixings close to edges for maximum rigidity. Flex installations might then form a column casing that would be rendered over or covered with a small format mosaic.

Where social housing providers are seeking to fit out full wet rooms for those who might need assistance with personal care, then there is also a Special Performance board which was originally developed for use in places like swimming pools.

The biggest seller still, though in terms of volume is Cempanel which is primarily specified for dry-lining and sheathing: the internal skin to a rainscreen cladding build up. Depending on dimensions, Cempanel can also take racking loads: being produced in thicknesses of 8, 10, 12 and 16 mm. It is also often used as a render carrier in exterior applications.

The FR board can provide up to 120 minutes of fire resistance and is widely specified for soffits in corridors, lift lobbies and other communal areas to buildings where the consideration of escape routes and combating the surface spread of flame are essential.

Ged Ferris added: “We see our board range as being of particular value to manufacturers of modules, pods, timber frame panel systems and other prefabricated solutions. They could even form the face to SIPs (Structural Insulated Panel) systems.

“As well as the merchant stockist, clients can also purchase through ‘optimizers’ – board cutting specialists who supply the exact sizes they need to make our standard product coordinate with elevation widths, window openings and things like flues or other service penetrations. It will also be a real advantage to customers that such a comprehensive selection is available from a single source.”
