Alutec and the future of housebuilding

Alutec’s aluminium rainwater systems have been installed on a landmark new housing project developed by Wienerberger, the leading provider of wall, roof and landscaping innovations. The Wienerberger e4 brick house™ at the BRE Innovation Park has been designed to be a future archetype for sustainable and affordable housing in the UK.

Designed in conjunction with global engineering and design consultancy ARUP, the e4 brick house™ is based around four fundamental principles of energy, economy, environment and emotion. Designed using Building Information Modelling (BIM), the Wienerberger e4 brick house™ has a build time of just 12 weeks, which is around half that of standard housing, and has the flexibility to work just as effectively through shared ownership as it would for a privately-owned home.

Central to the project’s ethos is the use of market leading building products and solutions that offer excellent sustainability credentials as well as high levels of performance. Specified for the coping, fascia and soffit system was Alutec’s Evoke range in RAL7016 Anthracite Grey. Made from highly durable composite aluminium, the Evoke range has a life expectancy of 50 years or more and features a unique nano self-cleaning coat resulting in minimal maintenance requirements.

Also specified was Alutec’s Evolve Half Round guttering and downpipes in the same colour. The Evolve product range is manufactured from marine grade aluminium and as this high quality material is so impervious to corrosion, it provides the same 50-year life expectancy as the coping, fascia and soffit. In addition, aluminium is also extremely light – up to 65 per cent lighter than cast iron alternatives – making it much safer to handle on site and quicker to install.

Importantly, Alutec’s products are available as BIM components which meant they could be seamlessly integrated into the design and allowed us to meet the tight deadlines we had set ourselves for the build of this project.”

What’s more, Alutec’s products installed on the Wienerberger e4 brick house are full recyclable at the end of their extended life span, making them some of the most sustainable products available in the UK.

Designed to achieve standards such as the Code for Sustainable Homes Level 4 without renewables, 2016 Part L and complying with Lifetime Homes and the London Housing Design Guide, the Wienerberger e4 brick house provides a real solution to the current housing crisis.

FIT show a systemfest as most big name profile companies take part

More than a dozen PVC-U and aluminium systems producers are showing at The FIT Show when it opens on April 12th, 13th and 14th next year, the biggest gathering of such companies for a decade.

With many of the industry’s established stalwarts exhibiting there are also one or two newer names joining the throng and all are claiming something new on offer, including brand new systems. However, all are keeping their big items under wraps for the time being.

FIT Show managing director Paul Godwin worked on Glassex for more than a decade and says this is the most impressive gathering of such companies for probably 10 years: “There has been a significant rationalisation of the systems companies since the heady days of the ‘80s and ‘90s but the dozen plus systems companies exhibiting at next year’s FIT Show is the best turnout for a decade, and includes most of the big names.

Companies exhibiting so far include: Deceuninck, Duraflex, Eclectic, Eurocell, Ikon, Liniar, Profile 22, Rehau, Selecta, Spectus, Swish, Synseal and VEKA.

“This is great news for the window industry,” Paul continued. “That these companies are investing millions of pounds in design, development, new machinery and tooling at this time is great news for all of us. It shows great faith in the future of the industry.

“As many of these companies are revealing brand new, ground-up systems, it presents an excellent opportunity for fabricators and installers that may be looking at additional or alternative systems, who can use the opportunity to compare most of the major brands, all under the same roof at the same time.”

Paul suggests that it shows an extraordinary commitment to The FIT Show: “That The FIT Show has become a key part of the window, door and conservatory industry’s calendar is confirmed by these and other exhibitors coordinating their product development cycle with the Show. We see that as a big responsibility and will be pulling out all the stops to make sure the 2016 FIT Show is the best so far. It is already the biggest in terms of the number and variety of exhibitors and should be in everyone’s diary: 12th, 13th 14th April 2016 at the International Centre Telford!”

Double boost for CMS with Kawneer dealership and CWCT membership

Leading window, door and curtain walling manufacturer and installer CMS Window Systems has boosted its aluminium division by adding one of the world’s leading systems to its portfolio and obtaining CWCT membership.

The company, which employs more than 200 people at its HQ and main manufacturing facility near Glasgow, has joined forces with Kawneer to become an authorised partner in a move which gives customers access to an even greater range of fenestration and building envelope solutions.

Since its launch almost a decade ago, CMS has enjoyed continued growth as one of Scotland’s market leading design manufacturers and installers of aluminium, PVCu and timber hybrid, window, door and curtain walling systems. The company works with a wide variety of commercial developers and main contractors delivering projects such as newbuild student accommodation, schools, hospitals and commercial offices.

CWCT uses various testing methods, which determine the level of serviceability of a window, façade or cladding system when subjected to various levels of water, air and solid object impact. The final level of certification depends on the pressure reached or the degree of damage caused after impact. The standards that make up the CWCT tests are calculated to give independent verification that windows and cladding designed for the building envelope, will achieve the values expected.

Its membership provides additional assurance to clients and main contractors and sits alongside a variety of key industry memberships and accreditations that CMS currently hold. These range from Investors in People and ISO 14001 at a business management level, right through to Constructionline, CHAS, Secured by Design and Energy Saving Trust recommended status which directly benefit clients
