There is an equine population of over 700,000 in the UK with a small fraction of that devoted to commercial horse racing, known as the ‘Sport of Kings’, at courses across the British Isles. The racing horses account for less than 20,000 of that population – but all horses need correct attention in terms of routine, feeding & nutrition, exercise, grooming and animal welfare – which includes keeping them clean.

And horses are big business – the whole market is estimated to be worth £8 Billion with just £3Billion being the value of the sports racing industry.

Keeping horses clean and groomed is extremely important and all equine stables and farms give great attention to hygiene and for this they need copious and ready flows of temperature controlled hot water. Chilly water can be extremely uncomfortable for the horse, so owners need to make sure the water is warm enough for the horse’s comfort and tolerance. The ideal water temperature for bathing a horse is around body temperature (this can range between 37.2°C to 38.5°C (99.0°F to 101.4°F), something around 37°C would be ideal.

 

“The above temperatures are near set points within the Rinnai water heater range of products, so this is a real differentiation to any other type of hot water delivery at a commercial stables or equine centre,” says Peter Seddon for Rinnai.

It should also be noted that recent studies by Pennsylvania University in the US show that horses also preferred to drink warm (66 Degrees F), not cold (32-38 degrees F). This is a critical part of well-being. Horses, also, can be prone to stomach illnesses – colic. Increasing water consumption can decrease the likelihood of this so keeping a horse properly hydrated is key to avoiding colic.

Saint-Gobain Weber is the first manufacturer in the UK and Ireland to release an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for monocouche render, helping specifiers make informed, sustainable choices when selecting finishes.

EPDs are a third-party certified document and are created based on data obtained through a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). The LCA uses different points during manufacture to assess potential environmental impacts with the aim to improve the overall environmental profile of the product. While not currently mandatory in the UK, EPDs are valid worldwide and are accepted in several rating schemes such as BREEAM.

The third-party certified document details the environmental performance lifecycle of the product and describes how they impact the environment at different stages of the manufacturing process. It also highlights how production waste is reduced and reused, the use of renewable energy sources and tracks if waste is sent to landfill.

Each different variation of Weber’s monocouche render – weberpral M (colours and chalk) and weberpral D – has its own EPD. In addition, an EPD is also available for Weber’s lightweight, brick-effect finish weberwall brick.

An EPD for weberwall brick is also now available. The fast-fix alternative to brick slips can be used for both refurbishment and new build projects, as well as internally. This product has been used on the eHome2 project at Salford University which saw Saint-Gobain partner with Barratt Developments to construct a test house, designed to meet future performance and regulation requirements. Just one pallet of weberwall brick was transported to the site compared to over 20 pallets if traditional brick was used therefore helping to reduce CO2 emissions during transport.

The EPDs are part of Weber’s ongoing work to help lessen its impact on the environment. Over the past year, Weber has implemented a range of measures including: the use of renewable energy sources during production; reducing and reusing waste; and investment in a gravity-fed silo system at their plants, saving time and energy compared with a traditional conveyor-based pneumatic delivery.

Weber has three manufacturing plants in the UK, helping to reduce fuel and emissions when transporting products to site. It has also entered a new relationship with logistics partner Menzies Distribution which operates a 100% Euro 6 compliant fleet. In addition, 84% of raw materials are sourced from within the UK.

Panel Systems, a leading supplier of architectural panels, is gearing up for a busy year ahead for its range of non-combustible FR-A glazing infill panels.

 

Since launching the FR-A panels, Panel Systems has experienced strong demand from contractors switching to using non-combustible materials in external walls of buildings over 11m in height, in order to meet latest Approved Document B Building Regulations.  In these cases, building materials must now be Euroclass A1 or A2-s1, d0.

Manufactured at the company’s centrally located UK facility to approved IOS 9001:2015 management standards, the FR-A panels achieve A2-s1,d0 classification when tested against the procedures detailed in EN 13501-1:2018. These non-combustible architectural panels are suitable for both glazing and curtain walling applications.

A spokesperson for Panel Systems, said:

“Our FR-A panels provide architects, developers and contractors with peace of mind when specifying panels to achieve the latest building regulations. These panels have been really popular, and we expect to see demand rise even further.”

These FR-A panels are available with both Anodised and Powder Coated (PPC) aluminium facings, in a variety of thicknesses.  Each panel goes through a controlled manufacturing process, which includes stringent quality checks on each component to ensure they meet the required standard of the tested specifications. As well as meeting fire safety regulations, Panel Systems’ FR-A panels offer excellent aesthetics, being available in a range of colours and finishes.

Each panel is made up of a fire resisting, non-combustible core of Nexus Stonewool Lamella, the fire safe material for composite structures.  This core has superb integrity, rigidity, flatness and built-in structural performance and its uniform vertical fibre structure provides optimum mechanical performance.   The unique open filament net allows a strong adhesive bond, which is complemented by Panel Systems’ adhesives, which are applied to ensure uniform, consistent coating.

The E01, E02 development at Quintain’s 85-acre Wembley Park, named Madison, reached completion in 2020. The mixed-use scheme includes 633 apartments all connected to a district heating network with secondary pipework insulated using Kingspan Kooltherm Pipe Insulation.

Work on E01 and E02 Wembley Park was overseen by Wates Construction. The 633 homes at Madison, neighbour the national stadium and a new three-acre park with neighbouring facilities across Wembley Park including a range of retail, residential, office, community, and leisure facilities.

The M&E specification has been overseen by LJJ Ltd in collaboration with consultants HDR. As part of Quintain’s long-term plan to decarbonise the large district heating network at Wembley Park, it was essential that the building services specification helped to limit energy demand for the new blocks. To help achieve this, Thermal Coverings installed Kooltherm Pipe Insulation on secondary LTHW pipework across the development.

With a thermal conductivity as low as 0.025 W/mK, Kooltherm Pipe Insulation offers one of the thinnest and most thermally efficient commonly available solutions for insulating pipework, supporting a simple installation by Thermal Coverings. This excellent performance can allow specifiers and contractors to limit heat losses when insulating secondary pipework to the minimum insulation thicknesses in table 8 of Objective 3.9 of CIBSE CP1 Heat Networks Code of Practice or to easily meet the new enhanced targets within BS 5422:2023.

In addition to helping the project team to achieve excellent system efficiency, Kooltherm Pipe Insulation will also help to limit heat gains from the secondary pipework within the building. This should help to reduce the risk of summer overheating within the buildings, a key concern within the Greater London region. Cornwall Insights’ latest quarterly overview of power market trends in Britain states that, because the UK failed to attract any bids from offshore wind developers in its most recent Contracts for Difference (CfD) auction round, it risks missing its 2030 target to host 50GW of offshore wind capacity.

Funding totalling £227m was announced under the auction round in September 2023. No offshore windfarm bids were received, largely because developers found the CfD offering economically unviable as supply chain costs mounted.

Several developers in the UK, EU and US have paused or scrapped offshore wind projects this year due to rising supply chain costs, partly caused by soaring energy and commodity prices and continued disruption related to Covid-19.

A notable headline was Vattenfall’s pausing of the 1.4GW Norfolk Boreas offshore wind project in June 2023. The business subsequently sold its Norfolk Offshore Wind Zone to RWE for £963m.

The UK Government intervened in the market in November 2023, pledging to increase the maximum strike price in the CfD by more than 50% for all kinds of wind farms. Ministers also firmed up plans to reward developers for factors such as local supply chain development.

Gas transition – stalling?

Nonetheless, Cornwall Insight believes some significant damage has been done to the UK’s offshore wind pipeline.

The body estimates that offshore wind will account for 21% of the UK’s power generation mix in 2030-31, up from 13% in 2023-5.

This trend will see offshore wind arrays overtaking gas combined cycle power plants (CCGTs) to become the UK’s biggest source of generation by the end of the decade. This year, CCGTs will account for 29% of the UK’s power generation mix, and this will fall to 20%.

But Cornwall Insight had foreseen a steeper drop in CCGT capacity at its previous quarterly power market outlook, published before the CfD disaster for offshore wind. The body believes the UK is more likely to turn to gas and biomass than to other renewables to maintain energy security amid missing its offshore wind target.

This could present a challenge to the UK’s ambitions to bring all unabated gas-fired power generation offline by 2035.

It bears noting that Ministers are proposing an annual emissions limit for existing and new-build gas plants in the capacity market. This could push the owners of older, less efficient CCGT plants to convert to open-cycle gas turbine (OCGT) power stations. These are commonly used as peaking plants as they are generally less efficient to run, but easier to power up and down, than CCGTs.

Cornwall Insight’s overarching conclusion is that whether you look at CCGTs and/or OCGT plants, the UK’s reliance on gas-fired power generation at the end of the decade is likely to be higher than it would have been with swifter policy pivots to account for recent and ongoing renewable energy supply chain challenges.

Building Services Consultants and contractor attendees at the recent Rinnai London Focus Group expressed ‘cautious positivity’ in reviewing 2023 and looking forward to 2024. All looked forward to the decarbonising of the energy/fuel mix and ancillary products in domestic and commercial properties. All reported their view on the increasing awareness and popularity of sustainable heating & hot water systems across the whole of the UK and that it will continue to do so, considering the medium and long-term aim of transitioning towards renewable energies.

 

 

Key factors that remain a concern for the London Focus Group entering 2024 are installation measurements that effect heat pump performance efficiency, clear centralised policy distribution and unclear legal framework that punishes system designers, installers or specifiers for work that causes a property to be labelled unfit.

Other subjects that provoked a sense of apprehension include hydrogen misinformation and misleading information regarding heat pumps performance. All professionals present also agreed that competency across all sectors can only be proved if information stemming from government is concise and unanimously accepted by all policy makers before release.

However, everyone who attended felt positive about the potential of 2024. New buildings are being constructed across London that need heating and hot water systems and with the Future buildings regulation set to electrify all new builds from 2025 all agreed that system design and infrastructural upgrades are central to success.

The up-and-coming energy transition also means there will be a multitude of required decarbonising solutions that are suitable for new builds and the nuances of the existing building stock, which will keep energy related professionals busy for the near future.

TRILUX’s Luceo Slim Steals the Spotlight at Pernod Ricard’s Grand Marseille Opening

TRILUX, a global leader in lighting solutions, is thrilled to announce its pivotal role in illuminating Pernod Ricard’s new headquarters at the historic Marseille Docks. The French spirits Group has recently relocated its corporate hub to the cultural and architectural masterpiece, showcasing an inspiring fusion of historical charm and modern technology.

Encompassing 8,000 square meters of office space within the iconic Marseille Docks, Pernod Ricard’s new facility is illuminated with TRILUX’s bespoke Luceo Slim LED pendant lights in sleek black. The state-of-the-art lighting seamlessly integrates with the historic ambience of the docks, creating a unique atmosphere throughout the building.

The Marseille Docks, built between 1858 and 1864, underwent extensive renovations in the 1990s, resulting in a captivating blend of historical and contemporary elements. Pernod Ricard, following the merger of Pernod and Ricard in 2020, strategically selected the Marseille Docks as the distinguished location for its corporate headquarters.

TRILUX’s Luceo Slim, with its large glare-free light emission surface and attractive indirect component, adds a breath of fresh air to the space. Tucked away in Sutton Bonington in Nottinghamshire sits a beautiful Grade II-listed home which was carefully brought back to life with a stunning renovation. Andrew Hindes Interiors was tasked with renovating two small rooms and turning them into one large bathroom. Preserving the history of the building was a key aspect of this renovation which came with several challenges due to its age.

Working with Schlüter-Systems products for over three years, Andrew and his team knew just what they needed when selecting a reliable solution to protect their client’s bathroom. The existing plumbing and pipework were removed and replaced with new pipework. New electrics and plastering were followed by the installation of a selection of Schlüter-Systems products, all with the aim of maximising the lifespan of the new room.

Starting in the shower area, the Schlüter-KERDI-TS complete set was adhered to the shower tray to create a sound waterproof connection between the tray, made of stone resin and the adjoining wall. This solution was particularly important as the two different components could potentially create a weak spot which would allow water ingress.

Further products from the Schlüter-KERDI waterproofing range were used, including the KERDI-200 membrane, Schlüter-KERDI-KEBA sealing band and Schlüter-KERDI-COLL sealing adhesive, supporting the overall protection of the bathroom.

For functional and aesthetic purposes, a prefabricated Schlüter-KERDI-BOARD-N niche was installed. This was perfect for the client as they needed storage that was convenient whilst remaining stylish. In terms of installation, it was far from challenging as it was easily integrated into the Schlüter-KERDI waterproofing system as a bonded waterproofing assembly.

 

 

Schlüter-DITRA-HEAT-DUO Peel & Stick was the answer when deciding what underfloor heating to install. Andrew commented on how using this product reduced installation time; installing in just one hour compared to the typical installation time of up to a day. Not only does DITRA-HEAT-DUO-PS offer advantages of a quick heat-up response and sound insulation, its peel and stick technology means time and material is saved when installing. Another stand-out benefit of using DITRA-HEAT is the minimal height build-up of the membrane and cables, which is approximately 7.6mm. Ensuring build up is kept to a minimum is important when it comes to a renovation project, particularly when dealing with the sensitive restoration of a property like this one. Once the room was waterproofed, 120 x 60 mm stone-effect porcelain tiles were fitted on the shower wall and behind the wash basin, with 120 x 20 mm wood-effect porcelain tiles on the floor.

 

 

When Andrew and his team began the work, they quickly realised the main challenges were down to the age of the property, with typically unlevel walls and dated plumbing and electrics. Ensuring this bathroom has a long lifespan and could meet the homeowners’ needs was important to Andrew and his team, and they remarked how nothing was too much trouble for Schlüter’s Area Sales Consultant, Stuart Gillson who was brilliant in offering support throughout the project. Andrew also received additional support from the technical team at Schlüter-Systems to help deal with some of the intricacies of the project.

It was clear that preserving the building’s history through the installation of new system solutions, whilst creating a modern touch within this new bathroom, was a key focus for the homeowners in making this their long-term dream home.
