Rinnai has unveiled a CIBSE-approved CPD on Seasonal Performance Factors, on the efficacy of Heat Pumps, to a focus group of consultants, systems designers and contractors in London. The CPD started as a ‘White Paper’ presenting an innovation in measuring system performance and providing increased detail into the efficiency of commercial heating and hot water dispersal systems. Rinnai’s Sean Ehlen M Eng was the author of the SPF White Paper, and it is freely available to view HERE

Rinna’s focus group was well attended and concentrated on introducing an alternative methodology – Seasonal Performance Factor – to evaluate the efficiency of commercial heating and hot water systems. Rinnai’s Sean Ehlen M Eng hosted the presentation explaining his new approach and then took questions. The peer-led focus group arrived at the conclusion that the Seasonal Performance Factor approach provided customers with greater added transparency towards system performance, cost and expectations.

Rinnai’s ‘White Paper’ report details the potential limitations of manufacturer-issued efficiency measures for Heat pumps, namely COP (Coefficient of performance) and SCOP (Seasonal Coefficient of Performance). Manufacturers often measure heat pump efficiency using Coefficient of Performance (COP), which is the ratio of useful heat energy produced to the electricity consumed at a specific external air temperature and temperature rise required.

Due to the SCOP rating solely measuring the efficiency of the heat pump unit, this may yield a lack of system congruity when considering the entire system. Consequently, relying on this performance measurement alone can affect the overall system expectations and ultimately the expected carbon reductions.

Instead, the Rinnai White paper has adopted the ‘Seasonal Performance Factor.’ This methodology evaluates all energy utilizing components within a commercial hot water system, therefore, measuring the performance of the entire system as opposed to solely the heat pump.

By presenting this White Paper to UK customers, Rinnai aims to provide information that delivers a concise and true account of commercial hot water heating performance using the ‘Seasonal Performance Factor’ methodology.

Rinnai continues to inform the UK market of details that provide an accurate statement of system performance, while considering the effects on operational expenditure, economic investment, and environmental impact.

Rinnai understands the significance of an investment during a time of sensitive economic constraints and rising energy costs. Rinnai aim to share all information that assists the UK customer in decision making that assists the drive to NetZero and is financially efficient.

ZEHNDER EMBRACES WELLUMIC LIGHT MANAGEMENT SYSTEM FROM TRILUX AND WAREMA IN THE “CENTRE OF CLIMATE.

Zehnder, the globally renowned expert in indoor climate solutions, has unveiled its groundbreaking “Centre of Climate” at its German headquarters in Lahr. Spanning an expansive 5,000 square metres, this state-of-the-art facility serves as a hub for innovation, learning, and collaboration, catering to employees, customers, and visitors alike. Central to the building’s holistic design is the WELLUMIC system, a collaborative creation of TRILUX and WAREMA. This intelligent system orchestrates real-time sun shading and lighting coordination, ensuring optimal lighting conditions while minimising energy consumption.

The “Centre of Climate” in Lahr, Baden-Württemberg, consists of open office spaces, meeting and conference rooms, a new restaurant with a café serving as a communal gathering place, and a brand experience room within its expansive footprint. The paramount objective of this architectural masterpiece is the well-being of its occupants.

Petra Frey-Gangi, Head of Marketing & Product Management Zehnder Germany, elaborated,

“Our comprehensive building concept not only raises energy efficiency to new heights but also creates an exceptionally inviting ambience that maximally supports individuals in their endeavours.”

The facility was inaugurated in March 2023.

UNPARALLELED INTELLIGENT CONTROL FOR OPTIMAL LIGHTING AND COST-EFFICIENCY

At the core of this sustainable design is Wellumic, an innovation developed by TRILUX and WAREMA. This solution harmonises lighting and sun shading, constituting a coordinated light management system. The algorithm-based control system optimally harnesses available daylight, simultaneously preventing indoor spaces from overheating, especially during summer, due to excessive sunlight exposure that would necessitate energy-intensive cooling. Sensors continuously gauge indoor and outdoor lighting conditions, automatically adjusting external blinds and lighting accordingly.

PRECISE SUN SHADING CONTROL, DOWN TO THE DEGREE AND MILLIMETRE

A notable feature is the precise control of external blinds through SMI motors. Beyond mere opening and closing, these motors finely adjust the angle of individual slats in real-time, down to the nearest degree. To minimise glare and maximise sunlight penetration, the intricate algorithm factors variables such as the sun’s angle relative to each window throughout the day and seasons, expertly adjusting slat angles accordingly.

The outcome is optimal lighting conditions, irrespective of the time of day or season, and a considerable reduction in energy consumption for cooling. Markus Schwab, a building physicist and Wellumic expert at WAREMA, remarked,

“Wellumic empowers companies to manage two essential aspects with one solution, streamlining the planning and implementation processes through intelligent interaction between proven systems.”

HUMAN CENTRIC LIGHTING (HCL) AND AWARD-WINNING LUMINAIRES FROM TRILUX

Recognising that light is more than just illumination, Zehnder has embraced high-quality HUMAN CENTRIC LIGHTING solutions from TRILUX across various areas of the building. These luminaires, featuring Active technology, mimic the spectral composition of daylight, delivering a “natural” artificial light that users find especially pleasing. Simultaneously, this lighting supports various physiological processes, including the sleep-wake cycle. The luminaires blend into the architectural design and enhance overall room aesthetics.

In line with this philosophy, the large office areas feature award-winning luminaires such as the PARELIA LED, LUCEO SLIM, and LATERALO RING LED pendant luminaires, accompanied by thoughtful lighting design. Complementing these are the FINEA LED light channel solutions, serving as suspended and surface-mounted fixtures to accentuate the atmosphere and provide wall illumination in the offices and think tanks.

SPECIAL DESIGN ELEMENT: HEATING AND COOLING SAIL WITH LIGHTING FUNCTION

Ceiling sails with heating and cooling functions from Zehnder, employed throughout the building, add a distinctive touch. As part of the project, they have been equipped with SONNOS LED downlights in an HCL design (Active) from TRILUX, further expanding their functionality to include lighting tasks. Lukas Hünting, Lighting Application Specialist at TRILUX, shared:

“To achieve an uncluttered ceiling appearance and offer flexible space utilisation, the initial lighting design was reimagined, with suspended luminaires centrally positioned under the ceiling sails instead of workstation-oriented placement.”

This effect extends beyond the building’s confines, as the illuminated ceiling becomes a striking signature for the company, visible from afar through the open glass facades.

Chris Goggin looks at the expansion of the global heat pump market as they will play a pivotal part in UK, European and international decarbonisation plans. Rinnai observes the market conditions that will likely see heat pump technology become standard household appliances on an international scale.

Heat pumps will make a significant contribution towards global decarbonisation aims, of that there appears to be little doubt. The international heat pump market is projected to substantially expand as fossil fuels are phased out in favour of clean carbon neutral energies. Heat pumps are becoming seen internationally as trusted tools of decarbonisation with major economies across the globe adopting them as a preferred method of heating and hot water delivery to domestic and commercial sites.

Heat pumps will certainly be a major contributor towards the introduction of clean renewable energy across EU member states. The EU aims to increase the number of heat pumps installed in member countries with its REPowerEU plan. The plan covers diversifying energy supplies, producing clean energy and reducing overall energy consumption.

Current estimations on heat pumps that have been installed across Europe are around 20 million. 3 million of these heat pumps were purchased during 2022. European heat pump sales throughout 2022 resulted in a 39% increase, up 5% when compared to 2021.

France bought and installed more heat pumps than any other EU nation in 2022 when compared to 21 other European heat pump markets. 621,776 individual heat pump units were sold and installed in France throughout 2022. UK statistics show that the UK had sales of 55,168.

Scandinavian and Baltic EU states maintain the highest levels of domestic heat pump adoption – Norway has 60%, Sweden 43%, Finland 41%, and Estonia 34%. Norway has 1.4 million actively operational heat pumps that provide essential heat and hot water to domestic properties.

Heat pumps provide heating and hot water towards 16% of all domestic and commercial properties across Europe and there are further plans to install an added 60 million more by 2030. Heat pump technology is a certified method of clean energy dispersal and international market projections expect further expansions in size and scope. The current European heat pump market is healthy whilst the future heat pump market will continue to grow.

America is another area of importance regarding domestic and commercial property heat pump adoption. More heat pumps were sold and installed than gas furnaces during 2022. Heat pump sales amounted to 4.3 million whilst sales of gas fuelled heating and hot water systems were 3.9 million.

The residential heat pump market in the US was valued at $13 billion in 2020 and is expected to grow at a CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate) of 5% between 2021 – 2030.

American heat pump adoption has resulted in an 11% increase in sales of air sourced heat pumps during 2022. Heat pump sales throughout US territory have steadily increased for 20 years. In 2001, 1.44 million air source heat pumps were sold. In 2021, customers purchased 3.92 million air source heat pumps.

As in Europe, the American heat pump market performs strongly and is expected to grow over the coming years. In 2022 the US was the most dynamic heat pump market in the world – with a 15% increase in recorded sales.

Another significant player in the international heat pump market is China, which manufactures 40% of the world’s heat pumps. China is the globes largest producer of heat pumps with many of the finished units being exported to Europe.

Heat pumps are a recognised technology throughout all Chinese regions and play a key part in heating and hot water delivery as well as air conditioning. 58.4 million heat pumps have been installed in China as of 2020 – 33% of the world’s installed heat pumps. China is the biggest market for air source heat pumps with sales increasing by 7% in 2021 and 12.5 million units in operation.

In 2022 China recorded a 20% increase in air to water heat pumps compared to sales statistics in 2021. Over 1 million air source heat pumps were sold in China in 2022. China is currently the third most dynamic international heat pump market with a recorded annual 13% increase in national sales.

According to the website Global Heat Pump Statistics (April 2023) “Leading manufacturers are seeing promising signs that today’s momentum and policy support could put the industry on a trajectory that triples sales by 2030 – and they have accordingly announced plans to invest more than $4 billion in expanding heat pump production and related efforts, mostly in Europe.”

Heat pump sales increased by more than 11% globally in 2022. Widespread UK heat pump adoption is yet to be fully announced through sales and industry growth statistics. However, it can be observed that the heat pump industry and market is expanding exponentially, with the UK expected to also increase the size and levels of activity within the domestic heat pump market. Doing so will ensure achievable domestic and commercial property decarbonisation.

Rainscreen cladding solutions feature on many different types of property, from apartment blocks and hotels to schools and railway stations, while the build-up behind the visible panels is relied upon to ensure their performance benefits extend to far more than being a first line of defence against the weather.

With this need for multi-functionality, industry specialist SFS has developed its offering on rainscreen cladding support systems to enable architects,  design engineers and cladding contractors to achieve an installation which delivers the required thermal, structural, fire and other performance targets in a safe and economic manner.

The manufacturer’s NVELOPE range supports concealed and visible fastened systems to meet most project’s aims while SFS Thermal Solutions ensures that the crucial challenge of closing the ‘Performance Gap’ can be adequately addressed. This requires not only understanding how the system can be correctly and efficiently installed on site; it also demands precise thermal modelling of the subframe to minimise point loss thermal bridging compromising the overall energy performance of the system.

David Fraser the Business Unit Manager for SFS, explained:

“As a key aspect on many building façades across our built environment, rainscreen cladding is a key contributor to a property’s overall energy performance, including for the huge number of older buildings which must be improved if we are to meet our net zero targets. Specifiers and installers need expert guidance if project energy design standards are to be achieved in practice. Our Thermal Solutions service and dedicated project managers can assist from the concept stages through to final delivery. Although the fitting of helping hand brackets represents a point loss thermal bridge within the continuity of the insulation, having accurate thermal modelling of different components and details, including for higher performing stainless-steel brackets and the essential thermal breaks to separate them from the main structure, helps to minimise the potential for problems relating to SAP or possibly during the working life of the building.”

While the SFS bracketry is designed for speed and ease of installation, as well as to accommodate normal variations in the construction tolerances of the masonry or metal framed structure, the systems within the NVELOPE Thermal Solutions range also offer a choice of performance points and the NVS+Thermal system is certified under the Passivhaus component standard.

The NVELOPE VB and HB ranges are produced in aluminium. (NV + Thermal & HB + Thermal are also compatible with SFS Thermal Pad) Then the NVELOPE NVS and NVS+ ranges offer the far lower thermal transmittance characteristics of 316 Stainless Steel, with a non-compressible thermal pad included to achieve the optimum U-values.

Yale has launched an innovative new window bracket which can reduce housebuilding programmes dramatically. It allows fully glazed windows to be installed into external timber wall panels and delivered flat to the building site.

The patented Yale Expede Window Bracket allows fabricators to fit fully glazed windows straight into the external timber wall panels at the factory during the production process. This saves time and money, provides a consistent factory finish and creates significant savings for housebuilders.

Time savings and increased sales revenue

The bracket offers increased productivity and a faster installation once the timber panels have been erected on site as the window is simply pushed out to the required distance and the final fix inserted to permanently hold in this position. Both internal and external trades can start immediately, as the build will be watertight within one day. This can reduce the overall programme by approximately three weeks, as well as reducing site costs.

Increased safety

Paul Atkinson, Managing Director at Yale, comments:

“For housebuilders, time is money, and our bracket speeds up the entire build programme and of course window installation. With the fully glazed window in place, wet trades can get onsite earlier, and buildings are more secure from the outset. It also reduces the risk of accidents linked to manual handling and working at heights.

“As the building is secured immediately when the timber frame is constructed, it reduces the risk of theft and fire and may also reduce site insurance costs. It’s no wonder housebuilders are eagerly awaiting this new product.”

Sustainability

Timber can dramatically reduce the carbon footprint of a new build. Of all the main building materials, it is the most environmentally friendly, as it has the lowest energy consumption and the lowest carbon dioxide emissions.

As the window is transported while being protected within the external timber wall panel itself, it takes up no additional space on the lorry. This means fewer miles clocked up in transit and less traffic on site. It also means there is a reduced risk of damage to the window, reducing waste.

Manufactured and tested in the UK, the Yale Expede window bracket has been subjected to loading in excess of 200kg in the open position for over 72 hours and corrosion testing up to 240 hours. It is available in 50mm and 75mm variants and is covered by Yale’s Lifetime Guarantee.
